We've seen it written that Astrantia 'Ruby Wedding' makes it inferior to some of the clonally propagated ones out there, but we've not found that the case at all. The ones we have are every bit as rich in colour as Ruby Wedding and Hadspen Blood. They don't have the dark staining leaves of the Gill Richardson Group, but for flower alone they are a lovely deep red with flowers of a very decent size. Ruby Wedding has its origins at the RHS Wisley where it was selected as a superior seedling in a sowing of Astrantia major subsp. major. Its bracts are of a good size and are strongly red to purple in hue. It is the parent of the seed strain known as Claret which may or may not live up to its parents reputation. It i svery similar to Hadspen Blood which has a similar bloodline but was selected by Nori Pope of Hadspen Gardens.

Like all Thistles, the flowers are a magnet for butterflies. 1m, May-June and then sporadically through the season. Would like a moist site.

Digitalis x mertonensis (Summer King) A hybrid between our native foxglove and the yellow perennial D.ambigua, Digitalis x mertonensis inherits the best of both parents. It benefits from D.ambigua's perennial nature whilst gaining colour and the shapely flower spikes of D.purpurea.  The whole plant is of a denser nature than D.purpurea with shorter, stouter spires of chunkier flowers in the most beguiling crushed strawberry pink, generously but subtly spotted within. I think this is a slow burner rather than a red hot Latin lover, but it's certainly a Geum to fall in love with. Geum 'Flames of Passion' is relatively short and neat at a foot high. The flowers are 2cm across and look down in a rather coy fashion. They are strawberry pink, slightly ruffled with 3 rows of petals and a charming yellow centre with a green eye. The dark maroon buds and stems round off the effect nicely. So if you are feeling coy yourself, perhaps it's time to give passion a try.

Geum chiloense 'Mrs Bradshaw'. (Fireball) Colourful and easily grown perennial forming a stout weed smothering clump of leaves and freely producing 2ft stems of bright red semi double flowers in summer. Mrs Bradshaw is absolutely, unashamedly red; not a hint of pink anywhere. The flowers will keep on coming if you cut out older flowering stems as their flowers begin to fade. There is a lot of 'air' in the flower heads, so this is an ideal plant to mingle amongst other colour or to look through to plants behind.

A Penstemon of excellent constutution which is also attractive just in leaf. Gives a long and colourful summer display even when not deadheaded. Cut back lightly in Autumn; harder in Spring. Bred to improve the constitution of P.'Southgate Gem' by crossing it with (possibly) P.hirsutus by the Swiss breeder, Hermann Wartmann in 1918. Although not stictly correct, the name 'Garnet' is the name usually applied in English speaking countries and the one under it was introduced in the 1930's

This excellent variety was introduced by Keith Wiley. Having occurred in the Garden House, Buckland Monachorum it was a self sown seedling from R.pinnata 'Superba' that proved to have much darker pink flowers than the parent. Flowers start off with a deep red bud, emerge a pale sugar pink and gradually fade through red to the deep maroon and highly ornamental persistent calyces. The emergent leaves are beautifully bronzed, fading a deep green. We find that the flowers are almost identical to our R.pinnata 'Elegans' but it has a leaf that is narrower in the segments.

  • Rodgersia pinnata 'Elegans'. Handsome leaves for moist shade - According to Dan Hinckley, the best form of Rodgersia pinnata. Standing up to 3ft tall the leaves are rough in texture, well rounded in form, burnished when young and colouring excellently in autumn. The flowers are carried on broad pagodas, a fluffy cream base, well tinted rosy pink. When the flowers are over the seed cases make fine ruddy brown decorations. Originally selected form the garden of Helen Dillon in Ireland.

Sanguisorba menziesii. An unusual and rather special plant for the summer border. Lovely mounds of dissected and smartly toothed grey-green leaves emerge early and act as a valuable foil for Spring bulbs. Then in June it sends up lots of long wiry self-supporting stems, each crowded with neat, almost cone-like flowers, each tightly packed with dried blood red florets which then erupt into shaggy pink foxtails. Makes an interesting focal point and especially good as a cut flower.

The leaves are sea-green, very like the leaves of our native Rowan in shape, with delicately crimped edges picked out in a bright cream. It isn't an in-your-face variegation, its just enough to pick out the leaf shape and lighten the foliage effect. I keep wanting to call this one 'Beaujolias' rather than 'Bordeaux', but then again after a glass or two of either what does it matter, the plant is still lovely. It sits about mid height amongst the Sanguisorbas, half way between 'Arnhem' and 'Chocolate Tip' and about in the middle for colour as well. It is a deep burgundy, (there goes another), less red than 'Arnhem' and less sombre than 'Chocolate Tip' and flowers in late summer on stiff swaying stems up to 1.5m tall.
