    Eryngium agavifolium. An architectural species which hails from stony hillsides and rocky riverbanks in the Cordoba region of Argentina. It has long pale green strap-like leaves with spiny edges, probably the broadest of the commonly grown long leaved species. The flower spikes are stiff 1m stalks topped with a small terminal knob of greeny white spiny cones. We've had this plant for years, but it has taken me many years to persuade Dawn of its merits. She's finally given in so it remains to be seen if I'm vindicated. A bold statement and Great for the bees. For full sun in a well drained but not dry soil. Hardy to -10 if really happy, less if miserable.

The clump gives rise to branching spikes of blue-green thistles with blue spiky bracts that begin silver. A beautiful plant all year 60cm (2ft) high which needs well drained soil in full sun. Great for the bees

    Eryngium x zabelii 'Big Blue' (Eryngium bourgatii x Eryngium alpinum). A beautiful hybrid between E. alpinum and E. bourgatii. 60-75cm (2-2.5ft) high with large silvery / steely blue collars, attractively cut but less frilly than in E. alpinum. This gorgeous hybrid is more vigorous and easier and longer lived than either of its parents. The flowers, which are loved by bees, start more silver and intensify their blue colouration as they age. They are produced July-August and dry really well.

This is very much along the same lines as June is when young, the difference being that June Fever looks like the contrast knob has been dialled to maximum. The Spring leaves are a bright glowing yellow with a narrow green edge. the colouring gradually fades to chartreuse, retaining more of a narrow edge than that of June which gets broader on older plants.

The narrow leaves have a very distinctive patterning consisting of a broad blue-green margin and apple-green, fading chartreuse centre with flecks of bright white at the junction between them. Like many Hosta, getting the light levels right is important to achieving the best colour.

Evergreen and especially attractive in spring as the young stems are produced with a curve like a cobra. Spikes of blue flowers with dainty long stamens in spring and summer curved like the emergent foliage.

Dorset Perennials – plants direct from the heart of Dorset.

At Dorset Perennials you will find a husband and wife team, Dawn and Martin, who have been plantsmen and nurserymen for nearly 25 years. Our nursery, situated in the North of Dorset close to the Somerset border, is full of the plants we love. There’s no overall theme, just an eclectic mix of perennials that, for one reason or another, we consider well worth growing. We have plants for shade, plants for sun, plants for wildlife and a few more just because. In short all the perennials you would ever need to make a garden full of colour throughout the year and full of the plants you need to make it hum with wildlife. We’ve tried to make this website full of inspirational colour and easy to use. The shop page has a nifty plant selector sidebar which can be used to filter our plants by size, colour season and so forth to help you quickly pin down the right plant for a particular spot.
