Ageratina altissima 'Chocolate' ( Eupatorium 'Chocolate' ). A useful plant in many respects, growing in a wide range of soils, providing there is moisture. Richly coloured leaves are an attraction throughout the season, whilst the fluffy white flowers, produced late in the summer are a magnet for bees and butterflies. 100cm. Looks particularly fine with the pastel blues of Nepeta and Eryngium

Ajuga 'Catlin's Giant' is just like all the other bugles except it has been at the steroids. Everything about it is twice as big as all the rest with big rounded leaves that are coloured with a good bronze overlay to the green base colour. Despite its large size it doesn't usually make such good ground cover as its smaller brethren. It tends more towards wandering about, popping up here and there and fading where it once was. Angelica sylvestris 'Purpurea' . Starting remarkably early in  the year this plant pushes up fascinating glossy purple foliage, soon becoming an imposing architectural feature topped with a dense spherical head of pink flowers. In appearance not dissimilar to a more sturdy cow parsley, but with less air and more presence. Will seed about mildly. Likes a good moist spot.

Clematis recta 'Purpurea'. Sophisticated herbaceous clematis whose 120 cm stems of purple foliage provide the perfect foil for the loose terminal panicles of starry white flowers. The foliage is a significant form in the early garden being both unusual and dark. The flowers are a lovely white cloud, similar to Old Man's Beard, perfect as an accompaniment to strong forms like pink roses. Makes a small densely packed matt. Best supported by a few twigs, which the leaves will cling to, as the stems will flop.

Corydalis flexuosa 'Purple Leaf' ('Blue Dragon') Compact mounds of purple tinged ferny foliage, topped off with charming spikes of scented blue  flowers in early Spring. 30*30cm. For moisture retentive soil in shade or half shade. This charming variety is tidier and neater than Corydalis 'Pere David' with foliage that is darker and flowers that are paler and pink tinged to begin with.

1989. One of the shorter varieties at just 60cm tall. The overall effect is muted and sober with sombre dark bronze leaves that set off beautifully the flowers which are orange, stained with distinct rust spots at the throat and lightened with yellow veins down the centre of the petals and bright yellow stamens. Darker buds complete the picture.

Great value throughout the year. Bertie Crug forms a low spreading mound of dark bronze-tinted shiny green leaves over which a long succession of pale pink flowers is produced. Good at the edges of beds or in a rock garden planting this is a reliable doer for full sun. Cooler Autumn winter brings a rich cherry red colour to the foliage. 15cm spreading.

Geranium maculatum 'Espresso'. Impressive leaves which are deeply fingered and coloured brown, a colour which lasts well into the Summer. Flowers are produced early and are pale pink. The whole plant is a little smaller than ‘Elizabeth Ann’. Geranium maculatum is a variable moisture loving species; the best of the North American species. Flowers appear April to June (and often again in Autumn) with clusters of upward facing flowers well above the deeply cut leaves. Best in damp shade, but needs some sun to develop the leaf colour . A really nice very dark-leaved G.pratense with white flowers heavily rayed in lavender. The flowers aren't startling white as you find in say a G.sanguineum Album, largely owing to the influence of the veins, an influence that can be quite pronounced at some times of day. The handsome deeply divided foliage is dark purple on dark purple stems in a shortish 30cm mound. Best in full sun, but not too dry, or in more shade if you don't mind the foliage developing more green. like all G,pratense it is prone to mildew after flowering and is best trimmed then to rejuvenate. 35cm high by 45cm wide. Arose from the original batch of Victor Reiter seed grown by Robin Moss. fusion_separator style_type="single solid" hide_on_mobile="small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility" class="" id="" sep_color="" top_margin="" bottom_margin="" border_size="" icon="" icon_circle="" icon_circle_color="" width="" alignment="center"][/fusion_separator]

Geranium pratense Victor Reiter Strain. Stunning new cultivar with leaves of a striking purple-black above which deep purple saucer shaped blooms are proudly displayed. Place in a prominent position where the unusual many fingered leaves will always provoke comment. Not as high as some of the meadow cranesbills. Leaves become greener as the year progresses or if they are in too much shade. Best in sun. to 60cm. There was a profusion of cultivars produced following the original Californian introduction of G.'Vicor Reiter' which has led to some muddling and confusion in the names of the purple leaved strains, some of which are seed raised, and some micropropagated. This is one of the seed raised strains. originally bred by Californian nurseryman Victor Reiter in the 1970's

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'. (Arabicus, Black dragon, Ebony Knight). Prized for their short evergreen, near black grassy foliage, this is an excellent plant for ground cover and for creating a lovely foil for winter flowering plants such as snowdrops or cyclamen. Flowers are produced in Autumn in short dense racemes and are white or lilac tinted and may be followed by black berries. Grow in sun providing the soil does not bake or in partial shade. Hardy to -15oC provided drainage is adequate. Apparently useful for stabilising erosion prone soils. Ophiopoghon derives from teh Greek 'ophis' = serpent and 'pogon' a beard. If anyone can show us a snake with a beard we'll try to find which bit of this palnt to compare it too and quite how it deserves its name.

Rheum palmatum 'Atrosanguineum'. A most dramatic plant with huge rhubarb leaves that unfurl darkest maroon from scarlet buds and then are topped by a 7-11 ft spike of pink fluffy flowers. Best grown in a damp site where the roots can find water. Our own selection, propagated clonally from a plant we selected out of seedlings many years ago - as deep a colour as we have seen anywhere.

This fascinating and unusual Verbena was discovered in the public garden in Bampton, Devon and has been identified as a variant of V.officinalis var. grandiflora which hails from S.Europe. Quite how it came to Devon is a mystery - perhaps seed travelled home as a holiday memento or on the feet of a bird. It is related to our native vervain. It emerges in Spring from a tight evergreen crown as dark purple shoots clothed with glossy, serrated purple leaves which have a real metallic sheen. The dark purple stems become wiry and branched making a twiggy bush about 2 feet high covered in tiny pink flowers over a very long period. For well drained soil in full sun. Our 'Bampton' are cutting raised from a good coloured clone
