A very neat, refined version of Ladies' Mantle with small neat foliage shaped like a rounded seven point star. The leaf edges are picked out in silvery hairs. The sprays of pale green flowers have distinctive calyces, lending the flowers a spherical texture. Smaller and less rambunctious than its cousin Alchemilla mollis but with similar charming flowers that make such a lovely foil to other flowers, both in the garden or in a vase. We've seen it written that Astrantia 'Ruby Wedding' makes it inferior to some of the clonally propagated ones out there, but we've not found that the case at all. The ones we have are every bit as rich in colour as Ruby Wedding and Hadspen Blood. They don't have the dark staining leaves of the Gill Richardson Group, but for flower alone they are a lovely deep red with flowers of a very decent size. Ruby Wedding has its origins at the RHS Wisley where it was selected as a superior seedling in a sowing of Astrantia major subsp. major. Its bracts are of a good size and are strongly red to purple in hue. It is the parent of the seed strain known as Claret which may or may not live up to its parents reputation. It i svery similar to Hadspen Blood which has a similar bloodline but was selected by Nori Pope of Hadspen Gardens.Links

An early flowering hybrid between B.ciliata and B.emeiensis nice, narrow, glossy green leaves, flushed red beneath and on the serrated margins. Like B.emiensis it has beautifully poised, shapely branched trusses of flowers, bell shaped at first becoming flared and wide separated with age. Also in common with B.emiensis its stems and calyxes are beautifully flushed with a pinky orange. Cyclamen coum is the other cyclamen commonly grown out of doors in Britain. It is a little fussier than Cyclamen hederifolium but essentially requires quick drainage, good winter light with a little shade in the hottest part of the day come Spring and shelter from cold drying winds. It is very hardy but dislikes freezing or wet winds. Its marbled kidney-shaped leaves appear in September and persist until late Spring when higher temperatures and sunlight force the into a protective dormancy. The flowers are more dumpy and rounded than typical cyclamen flowers and come in a range of colours from white through pink to deep magenta, always with a darker blotch at the mouth of the paler eyes. Don't be confused by the name of this Geranium, it is named after a house, not one of it's characteristics. The flowers are some of the darkest of the group, being a rich pinky purple at the centre fading out towards pink at the edge with a white edge. Strong bee lines complete the design. Not quite as striking as Blueberry Ice, but still very nice indeed. Good for growing in dry shady situations where many plants would struggle. To me, this variety is distinguished by the contrast of the pale sugary-pink flowers against the dark purple ruff of bracts below the inflorescence. It is a long established variety which has gained itself an AGM, having a long flowering period and being a little less spreading than some. This variety is distinctive for its flowers of clear pink formed into relatively rounded flower heads. It was one of the first varieties to come out of a breeding program at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Morden, Manitoba who set out to concentrate on mildew resistance. It has achieved an AGM from the RHS and has an excellent reputation for mildew resistance, one endorsed by an evaluation program at the Chicago Botanic gardens. However, I would sound a note of caution. Another Monarda evaluation conducted by the Mount Cuba Center rated Marshall's Delight very poorly, mainly on account of it mildew susceptibility. This can probably be attributed to the varieties preference for certain climates. The only child of the genus Morina that finds a ready home in the English garden. This rare beuty from the Himalayas, has a rosette of bright glossy green thistle-like leaves which form an evergreen rosette in mild or sheltered gardens. If brushed against (mind the spikes) they emit an intriguing citrusy aroma, quite out of character with its appearance. In mid summer it sends up strong stems which carry delightful and curious whorls of thistly bracted tubular flowers. As the flowers open they are of the palest pink, almost white, but once fertilisation is achieved the flowers develop a rosy glow and eventually become quite deep pink, thus siganlling to the bees that the nectaries have been drained. This creates a beautiful multi-tonal effect. Morinas need decent drainage and really like gravel gardens where they can seed about gently. The tap roots resent disturbance so allow them to grow where they choose. Named in honour of Rene Morin, a French nurseryman who is hailed as being the first to produce a plant catalogue way back in 1621. Needs full sun, moist but well drained soil and a mild climate. -

Onopordum acanthium. (Scotch Thistle). A stately architectural plant with attitude ! The large Acanthus-like leaves are densely woolly silver and tipped with real thistle barbs. At first forming an impressive evergreen rosette, during the second year, in April it mounts its advance skywards. A very stout, silver 'trunk' is winged, well clothed in woolly silver leaves and terminates in a broad candelabra bearing a succession of the big mauvey-pink and nectar-rich silver thistles that are depicted on tins of shortbread and which are beloved by the bees and butterflies. Persicaria microcephala 'Red Dragon'. This is a really excellent foliage plant if you want to add a dramatic splash of burgundy foliage into a scheme. You can either leave it to grow to its full height of about 1m with terminal clusters of white flowers or regularly trim it to the base to produce fresher stronger coloured growth. The leaves tend to be coloured in 3 patches, a dark triangle at the base, followed by a silvered 'V' and finally the red main part of the leaf. They can be rather changeable in colour. New growth in good light is rich burgundy, but later in the season it tends more towards brown and can be quite green in low light or shade. Don't worry if the early growth gets frosted off, which it often does, it soon recovers.Links

A delicate unusual Solomon's Seal discovered in Yunnan in China where it grows wild in rock crevices in full sun. It produces low arching stems, rarely more than 15 inches high, clothed with elegant whorls of narrow lanceolate leaves with unusual cirrose leaf tips. Cirrose means that the apexes of the leaf blades are elongated and coiled. This property arose as an aide to supporting itself as it clambers up through undergrowth. This a very tall and slender solomon's seal growing anything from 1 to 3m in height. The willowy stems are whorled with narrow leaves with curling tips. Below these come clusters of small bells. Whilst some strains come with rich red-pink flowers, our strain is a much more muted white with flared petals with purple edges. In the wild this plant can be found in forests and rocky slopes growing in shady situtions at altitudes of 700m up to 3600m. It is found in E.China down through Myanmar to Vietnam. From a dark shining rosette of leaves arise several stems bearing relatively long-stalked white flowers with a soft fluttery edge. A relatively short lived variety. 60cm. May to August. Commonly known as the purple mullein, the parents of this plant hail form Southern Europe and Asia, growing to 60cm in flower which they do in the early part of Summer. It will self seed in the garden if happy but may not always throw whites unless carefully isolated as it hails from genes which display violets, purples and pinks in the flower. The phoeniceum hybrids are thought to have been one of the original parents back in the 1930's of the taller, very pretty Cotswold Hybrids such as 'Gainsborough' and 'Pink Domino'. This fascinating and unusual Verbena was discovered in the public garden in Bampton, Devon and has been identified as a variant of V.officinalis var. grandiflora which hails from S.Europe. Quite how it came to Devon is a mystery - perhaps seed travelled home as a holiday memento or on the feet of a bird. It is related to our native vervain. It emerges in Spring from a tight evergreen crown as dark purple shoots clothed with glossy, serrated purple leaves which have a real metallic sheen. The dark purple stems become wiry and branched making a twiggy bush about 2 feet high covered in tiny pink flowers over a very long period. For well drained soil in full sun. Vinca difformis 'Jenny Pym'. This Vinca grows two sorts of shoots, hence its name difformis. One shoot is long and barren, the other much shorter, upright up to 30cm tall and bears the flowers. These upright shoots are clustered and in this form carry pink flowers with a distinct white central region. Vinca difformis is quite similar to Vinca major in many respects, differing most significantly in its habit of flowering right from Autumn, through mild Winter spells to Spring. Viola 'Bournemouth Gem' ( violet ). A selection of our native sweet violet bred especially to produce violets for the trade in cut flower posies. The flowers are exceptionally large with an open wide form and are borne on long stems above the partially evergreen foliage. Unfortunately the price of the large flowers is that the scent has been largely lost from this variety, one of the Devon Violets. Viola 'Rebecca'. Compact hybrid viola with a long flowering season from Spring through Summer. This is one of the lovely Violetta group of violets. This is an excellent edging plant, its dark purple leaves forming an excellent foil for its own violet flowers as well as those of many other perennials. Once a rarity, this large impressive fern from North America is now much more commonly seen. It comes form the Western Coastal region of North America, from British Columbia right down to California. The relatively narrow fronds are held mostly erect and will reach about a metre in length. In the wild they can reach 2m (even reports of 3m) but in our climate 1m is more realistic. To get the very best, Woodwardia fimbriata would prefer a moist soil, moist atmosphere with warm Summers and mild Winters. Give it time as well as it is slow to settle and increase, but the wait and patience will be worth it as it is a most impressive fern. Cold tolerance should go down to about -10C. Unlike some Woodwardia the new growth of this species is green and it also lacks the bulbils that some species carry.
