This is a species that is critically endangered in its native Armenia, being under pressure from expanding arable lands. It is naturally similar in many ways to its more often encountered subspecies peringii. One of the main differences is that the leaves are barely toothed rather than the deeply cut form of the subspecies. The leaves are long and narrow and have a slightly hairy texture. In flower they are again similar but with more of an emphasis on pink rather than pinky purple. For a warm sunny site if you want it to flower well.

A new form of Acanthus mollis with beautiful, bold broad shining golden foliage, particularly in Spring and Autumn, but also goldy in Summer if grown in the shade. Typical white slipper shaped flowers with strong purple hoods grow on 90cm tall stems, persisting for a long time from June to September. Perhaps not quite as hardy as the type but still good to -10 degrees especially if protected with a mulch, a course that is essential for the first Winter.

This is a great form of Hart's Tongue fern that is little seen. It was given to us years ago by Mike and Dilly Smith and it has been brightening the garden by our back door ever since, getting better by the year. It is a fine member of the Crispum Group with deeply ruffled edges to the leaves that are worthy enough on their own. However, given sufficient light, the leaves are a rich yellow for most of the Spring, only darkening to green late in the Summer. The light is essential to get the golden colour, but direct sun will cause the leaves to burn. In shade it will be entirely green, but somewhere in-between it can show partial yellowing or even variegated stripes. Asplenium Scolpendrium 'Bolton' is very similar. 30-40cm tall. It is sterile and difficult to propagate.

We've seen it written that Astrantia 'Ruby Wedding' makes it inferior to some of the clonally propagated ones out there, but we've not found that the case at all. The ones we have are every bit as rich in colour as Ruby Wedding and Hadspen Blood. They don't have the dark staining leaves of the Gill Richardson Group, but for flower alone they are a lovely deep red with flowers of a very decent size. Ruby Wedding has its origins at the RHS Wisley where it was selected as a superior seedling in a sowing of Astrantia major subsp. major. Its bracts are of a good size and are strongly red to purple in hue. It is the parent of the seed strain known as Claret which may or may not live up to its parents reputation. Cyclamen coum is the other cyclamen commonly grown out of doors in Britain. It is a little fussier than Cyclamen hederifolium but essentially requires quick drainage, good winter light with a little shade in the hottest part of the day come Spring and shelter from cold drying winds. It is very hardy but dislikes freezing or wet winds. Its marbled kidney-shaped leaves appear in September and persist until late Spring when higher temperatures and sunlight force the into a protective dormancy. The flowers are more dumpy and rounded than typical cyclamen flowers and come in a range of colours from white through pink to deep magenta, always with a darker blotch at the mouth of the paler eyes. They liven up the Winter garden, appearing as they do from Christmas onwards, being remarkably cold tolerant. Excellent for naturalising in sunny banks at the foot of trees, even conifers providing the branches don't come too close to the ground. Vivid pink with a fully double, tight bun centre, surrounded by a horizontal rim of ray florets. The bun centre is accentuated by a darker eye. The flowers start quite flat with a little frilly centre and just get fuller and fuller and fuller as time goes on until they are finally like a pom-pom. Echinaceas are hardy as far as temperature goes and they are undoubtedly lovely. What is also not in doubt is that they die reliably in many people's gardens. At the root of this is the great British Winter climate. Echinaceas want moist roots and dry free flowing air; what we give them is a regular deluge followed by misty, muggy days. The consequence is fungal rots and a dead Coneflower. You can help by planting your Echinacea in an open situation where the breeze will keep the crown drier, but the stark reality is that Echinacea are not reliable in everyone's garden. As a consequence will only consider complaints about Echinacea within a month of purchase and certainly not following a Winter.

The centre of each flower has a big boss of yellow stamens tipped with brown anthers all ringed around with the red styles in the middle. Flip the flower over and you find it is washed over in a lovely apricot shade with a dark red calyx and stem. All in all its enough to get you grabbing your skirt and bursting into song.

I think this is a slow burner rather than a red hot Latin lover, but it's certainly a Geum to fall in love with. Geum 'Flames of Passion' is relatively short and neat at a foot high. The flowers are 2cm across and look down in a rather coy fashion. They are strawberry pink, slightly ruffled with 3 rows of petals and a charming yellow centre with a green eye. The dark maroon buds and stems round off the effect nicely. So if you are feeling coy yourself, perhaps it's time to give passion a try.

Like Can-can this neat little Geum has warm yellow petals tipped and suffused with coppery peach tones. It has 3 rows of petals which are not only ruffled but also beautifully frilly at the edge. The effect is neat, delicate and quite charming. The centres of new flowers are fresh pale green with a big boss of yellow tipped anthers whilst the stigmas are so many they are twisted together. The nodding buds are wrapped in pomegranate red calyces with similirly coloured stems.

This is one for those of you that like something a bit more subtle - a bit of a symphony in cream and green. There are up to 3 rows of petals, each one long stalked giving a gap at the flower base. They are white, deliciously green shaded in the bee lines and the throat, especially as they first open. The flowers hang down so you need to get down to appreciate the fluffy green styles. It is a good clumper and short at 12 inches

This one evokes childhood memories of walking behind the finger mower in Summer meadows, collecting armfuls of daisies and knapwed flowers as they were cut down with the hay. To me, this variety is distinguished by the contrast of the pale sugary-pink flowers against the dark purple ruff of bracts below the inflorescence. It is a long established variety which has gained itself an AGM, having a long flowering period and being a little less spreading than some. However when trialled in America alongside many other Monarda it scored poorly, especially in mildew resistence, but then again mildew is very much in the variety description of most Monarda. I refer you to my comments under Monarda 'Marshall's Delight'.

This variety is distinctive for its flowers of clear pink formed into relatively rounded flower heads. It was one of the first varieties to come out of a breeding program at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Morden, Manitoba who set out to concentrate on mildew resistance. It has achieved an AGM from the RHS and has an excellent reputation for mildew resistance, one endorsed by an evaluation program at the Chicago Botanic gardens. However, I would sound a note of caution. Another Monarda evaluation conducted by the Mount Cuba Center rated Marshall's Delight very poorly, mainly on account of it mildew susceptibility. This can probably be attributed to the varieties preference for certain climates. I think the moral is, try it, treat it nice and appreciate the lovely flowers. 1-1.5m tall

The Upper petal is narrower than many Labiates and gives Monarda a very distinctive look. The name Bee Balm aludes to the fact that bees are attracted to the profuse nectar produced.

Persicaria microcephala 'Red Dragon'. This is a really excellent foliage plant if you want to add a dramatic splash of burgundy foliage into a scheme. You can either leave it to grow to its full height of about 1m with terminal clusters of white flowers or regularly trim it to the base to produce fresher stronger coloured growth. The leaves tend to be coloured in 3 patches, a dark triangle at the base, followed by a silvered 'V' and finally the red main part of the leaf. They can be rather changeable in colour. New growth in good light is rich burgundy, but later in the season it tends more towards brown and can be quite green in low light or shade. A delicate unusual Solomon's Seal discovered in Yunnan in China where it grows wild in rock crevices in full sun. It produces low arching stems, rarely more than 15 inches high, clothed with elegant whorls of narrow lanceolate leaves with unusual cirrose leaf tips. Cirrose means that the apexes of the leaf blades are elongated and coiled. This property arose as an aide to supporting itself as it clambers up through undergrowth. In late Spring 2-8 flowers are produced in the upper leaf axils, followed by by coral-red fleshy fruits Grow it in cool, humus-rich well drained soil. The flowers age to pure white. Its Mediterranean roots do make it somewhat tender. It is reliable in the South West but in less favourable climates it requires the shelter of a warm wall. It appreciates some sun. A charming Winter plant. 30 x 60cm, spreading. Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over

Vinca difformis 'Jenny Pym'. This Vinca grows two sorts of shoots, hence its name difformis. One shoot is long and barren, the other much shorter, upright up to 30cm tall and bears the flowers. These upright shoots are clustered and in this form carry pink flowers with a distinct white central region. Vinca difformis is quite similar to Vinca major in many respects, differing most significantly in its habit of flowering right from Autumn, through mild Winter spells to Spring. Vinca difformis is not as hardy as the more common species but is reliable in the South West and good elsewhere with the shelter of a wall. Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over

This is a sweet little Vinca with much to recommend it. The flowers are white with a rosy glow about the throat and the foliage has a pretty variegation. It is fresh green with a yellow edge when young, the edge fading to white as it ages.Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over

Vinca minor 'La Grave' ('Bowles's Variety'). Vinca minor is the lesser Periwinkle, the smaller of the two species most commonly found. Its makes excellent ground cover in almost any soil short of a bog, growing in sun or shade. The small leaves are a deep rich green and a lovely setting for the pale sky blue flowers which are produced in the Spring. The foliage is a little larger than in 'Gertrude Jekyll'. Each flower is formed from 5 blunt lobes creating a pentagonal outline. Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over

a recent introduction from ground cover specialists Helix Pflanzen of Germany. This lovely little variety combines a nice cream edged leaf with pure white flowers. Selected firstly because of its attractive foliage, this variety will quickly make excellent ground cover in most soils, including dry shade. In spring it will be studded with pure white flowers. (I note that the Helix website lists this as 'Evelyn' - no 'e' - but I am going, for no particular reason, with the RHS approved 'Evelyne') Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over

An excellent variety with abundant blue flowers a good as 'La Grave' and variegated foliage into the bargain. Possibly a little more compact or tight in growth than some of the other varieties, but despite this a great coverer of the ground. Foliage with a clean bright white edge which it keeps all year.Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over

Viola 'Bournemouth Gem' ( violet ). A selection of our native sweet violet bred especially to produce violets for the trade in cut flower posies. The flowers are exceptionally large with an open wide form and are borne on long stems above the partially evergreen foliage. Unfortunately the price of the large flowers is that the scent has been largely lost from this variety, one of the Devon Violets. Back at the turn of last century, the area around Dawlish, Devon was famous for producing violets for the cut flower and perfume trade.  It grows in much more open clumps than Viola odorata and has distinctive veined, heart-shaped leaves which are a litle glossy. Grows in shade or sun. Prefers a moist soil

A form of sweet violet that is quite close to the type, but is distinguished by its vigour, large flowers produced on long stems and excellent scent. Originating from a seedling introduced by the late Charles Groves and named after his son. With pedigree like that, you know that this is an excellent cultivar. 1985

A strong growing variety with nicely scented flowers held well up on strong rose coloured stems. The flowers are near white with a variable flush of apricot-pink which intensifies to rose madder on the spur. The upper (posterior) petals tend to flare slightly, with the bottom (lateral and anterior) petals closer together creating an overall heart shaped outline. Very pretty. CW Groves and Son

Similar in colour to Sultan but tending more towards magenta with less violet flushing, just violet veining. The flowers are more rounded as well with a strong scent. A strong vigorous variety named after a former seedsman from CW Groves and Son.

Viola 'Lydia Groves'. Wide open-faced, large flowers of rich sugar pink with little flecks of even richer pink which are only obvious when observed closely, which is a treat in itself as it is very richly scented. Unlike some pink violets the colour holds well as the flowers age and they don't discolour badly. Floriferous and a little charmer for the spring garden.

Viola 'Melanie'. (Viola 'Katja'). It's hard to resist the charm ( and perfume ) of the humble viola. But if you are looking for something a bit different, forget papal purple, this Viola is the richest Catholic Bishop Pink you'll come across. Deep and extravagant with a delightful silver edge. It is floriferous, doesn't fade and has an intoxicating fragrance. i couldn't resist it - the colour stands out so zingingly.

Viola 'Rebecca'. Compact hybrid viola with a long flowering season from Spring through Summer. This is one of the lovely Violetta group of violets. They form really tight hummocks of foliage and throughout their long season they are absolutely covered in outward facing pansy-like flowers with a delicious fragrance. Think of them like a perennial pansy that's been to finishing school. Rebecca has a base colour of cream, shaded lemon on the lowest petal with a rich yellow eye. Each petal is then shaded to pale lilac with the edges flecked mauve. Heavily scented. Any good soil

Viola odorata 'Mrs R.O.Barton'. Bred by Windward Nurseries in 1930. Large white flowers flecked with purple on long stems. A vigorous form creating carpets of heart-shaped leaves and generous quantities of variously spotted and streaked flowers. In cooler weather the purple seems more intense and can even give the petals a watercolour wash of purple. Medium scent. When I was a girl I had a small white, 3-sided bottle of violet perfume on my dressing table - the scent always takes me right back

Once a rarity, this large impressive fern from North America is now much more commonly seen. It comes form the Western Coastal region of North America, from British Columbia right down to California. The relatively narrow fronds are held mostly erect and will reach about a metre in length. In the wild they can reach 2m (even reports of 3m) but in our climate 1m is more realistic. To get the very best, Woodwardia fimbriata would prefer a moist soil, moist atmosphere with warm Summers and mild Winters. Give it time as well as it is slow to settle and increase, but the wait and patience will be worth it as it is a most impressive fern. Cold tolerance should go down to about -10C. Unlike some Woodwardia the new growth of this species is green and it also lacks the bulbils that some species carry.
