Agapanthus 'Enigma'. The first bicolour agapanthus to be bred in the UK by Ken Rigney. This lovely Agapanthus is neither blue nor white but a beautiful combination of both. Lots of trumpet shaped flowers are borne by reddish bronze pedicels and from white buds become more and more stained at the bases with purple-blue. When fully open the insides and main section of the petals are pure white but the tube and a stripe on the reverse of the petals is violet. The white stamens are tipped with dark anthers. This is a compact form growing just 35-40cm high with the deepest lavender-blue flowers of any Amsonia. It arose in a seedling batch of Amsonia tabernaemontana on a nursery in Connecticut and is thought to possibly be a hybrid with Amsonnia hubrechtii. It pays its way all year with neat shiny green leaves on a compact easy care plant, topped with flowers in June to July which emerge from long dark buds. It takes on lovely yellow Autumn colours in Autumn. Perfect as an edging plant. It does start off slowly but builds up stature year on year, rarely needing dividing. Bred at the RHS in Chiswick in 1902, this variety didn't really make a mark until quite recently. A large and dramatic Aster with tall stiff shiny jet black stems topping out at nearly 5 feet high. Dark green leaves are also heavily flushed black by flowering time in late September. If that wasn't reason enough to include it at the back of your border it produces clouds and clouds of quite large mauvey-blue flowers at a time when the rest of the garden is fading.Links

A beautifully shaped fully double bloom crammed with so many petals it creates a perfect lavender-blue powder-puff a whole 5cm across. 90cm Mid to late September onwards. Sturdy stems. This variety came out of 'Ada Ballard', which was one of the first really double Asters raised by Ernest Ballard, but which lacked the intensity of blue of its parents. Blue False Indigo. Baptisia carries tall, straight open spikes of really blue pea flowers followed by decorative seed pods which dry well for Winter decoration. Whilst most of the species in this genus grow on sandy, dry woodland soils, Baptisia australis is a native of riverbanks. It enjoys drainage but likes moisture and a deep root. Best planted in a lime free soil in a place where it can be left undisturbed. It is slow starter and disappointing to start with, but give it time as once established it will gradually build over a number of years to a plant that can flower to 75cm tall and be quite showy and a real talking point. -

It has the yellow leaves of the former, longer lasting than the parent, with flowers in a pinky-blue produced all throughout the summer. Its AGM says it is undoubtedly a good cultivar, but anyone who knows me, knows my thoughts on plants that pair yellow leaves and pink flowers so I'll shut up now. Beautiful mid violet-blue flowers with the fall petals being etched with intricate netting over the base of each fall petal which start yellow nearest the stalk, graduating to white and finally blue as they round out. The standards are of a deep denim blue, delicately veined. A good 'do-er' this Iris is happy in any moist soil, pond margin or open border, even tolerating quite dry conditions when established (our's is under a beech hedge!). They will stand full sun to partial shade but shade will diminish the number of flowers produced. Plentiful strap-like foliage making a substantial clump, best divided in August every three or so years to maintain good flowering. 60-75cm. May to June. Great Blue Lobelia, Blue Cardinal Flower. This is quite a tough, hardy and reliable Lobelia which, although not long lived, will cheerfully seed itself around any bit of wet ground. The flower spikes are relatively dense, up to 3 feet tall and are crowded with flowers of a really intense sky blue. It comes from moist to wet soils in Canada and North America and will grow in sun or shade. Its specific epithet 'siphilitica' comes from its supposed efficacy in curing the disease Syphilis, for which it was prescribed by the North American Indians. Despite its name, 'Wlaker's Low' is much the same size as 'Six Hill's Giant' at about 60cm height and spread, though it has a reputation for collapsing less. It is a good variety, flowering slightly earlier in May, compared to June for 'Six Hills Giant', with a more arching habit and more tint to the stems. Penstemon 'Sour Grapes' ('Stapleford Gem') is a larger, taller cultivar with strong upright flowering spikes of creamy white flowers, painted lilac and pink on the outside. 60cm, flowering throughout Summer. This is a cultivar with a confused history. It is entirely possible that two similar cultivars were named 'Sour Grapes', one raised by Nellie Britten in the late 1930's and the other given to Marjery Fish in the 1950's. Further confusion comes from a similarity and mixed labelling in the trade with P.'Stapleford Gem'. I don't want to make any claims as to which ours is, I would just say that it is a strong grower of dense habit with distinctively dark, slightly hairy leaves which at some times of the year are markedly cross shaped in the way they grow on the stem. The flowers vary dependant on conditions but are a mix of lilac and blue shades and most lovely. If there is a Penstemon expert out there who would like to help with identification, I'd welcome the input. Cut back lightly in Autumn, harder in SpringLinks
