Acanthus dioscoridis var. perringii. A short really spiky acanthus for growing in a spot that is warm and dry. Full sun will bring the best flowering when the highly unusual short spikes of hooded flowers can best be appreciated. Differs from Acanthus dioscoridis in the divided nature of the leaves. Flowers pale to deeper pink covered by pink veined hoods. 40cm. A good alternative to the larger species where space is limited.

This Aster opens a myriad of small (2cm) single lilac-pink daisies on a short twiggy bush. Although classified as a novi-belgii hybrid it leans quite heavily in both flower shape and branching habit towards the style of a lateriflorus. As the flowers mature, the central grey-yellow boss becomes much elongated to a prominent bun the colour of crushed strawberries and the petals begin to reflex. Whatever the classification, with the lovely warm pink colouring I just couldn't resist it. 80cm, October. Some mildew resistance.

A striking autumn flowering Aster with branching heads producing a mass of very bright cerise scarlet daisies warm enough to cheer the dullest day in fact when in full bloom the flower colour is strident enough to deliver a firm slap around the chops. It is just the brightest of pinks but it goes so well with the warm tones of Autumn. I'm not sure who Alma Potschke was, but she was clearly well worth remembering ( 'Andenken an' means 'in memory of' similar to the French version 'Souvenir de' ) . Very easy to grow. Height 1.3m (4ft). Like all the novae-angliaes it produces a series of unbranched stems topped with a branching terminal head of flowers. I am very grateful to Heather Farquharson whose research has recently answered my query above. I couldn't better her writing so I hope she doesn't mind me quoting it uncut.  'There is a German nursery near Stuttgart, www.poetschke.de, and the owner who developed the plant called it after his mother.  I only hope he did not call it after her because of memories of her delivering firm slaps around the chops and the resulting rosy cheeks.   Let's hope he had happier memories of her.' Its not uncommon for customer asking for this plant to decide that 5 consonants in a row is just too much and suffer verbal apoplexy somewhere soon after the 'Andenken'. Sometimes, with a glorious British disregard for correctness we settle for 'Posh' or maybe something like 'Potsky'. Having consulted with a German friend I am told the good lady's name should be pronounced more like 'Purr - sh - k' with a soft final 'k'.

Aster 'Lye End Beauty' falls somewhere in-between 'Harrington's Pink' and 'Alma Potschke' in the colour stakes. The narrow petals are a rich, but not strident cerise on their inner surface and a silvery pink on the reverse. With a dark ruff of narrow bracts and rose tinted stems it was certainly well named. Like most novae-angliae types it is relatively tall with long straight stems which may need staking. Grow it well back in the border where it can hide away all summer, revealing its full glory in Autumn as those in front fade and are cut back. I was delighted to come across this Aster recemtly as it is one of the short series of Aster raised by the late George Chiswell, who was well known to friends of ours. Timsbury has semi-double soft rose pink flowers and flowers in October at around 1m high. George Chiswell was born in Colwall in Malvern, the home of the famous Ballard Asters. He started his career working in the gardens of Old Colwall House near Malvern for Mrs Raynor-Wood. After WWII he moved on to Midsommer Norton in Somerset and in the 1960's ran his own nursery at the Priory there. Perhaps he had a fondness for the Asters he must have remembered from his youth in the Ballard trial grounds in Malvern, as he began a breeding programme of his own, producing a series of Asters, based on the Ballard strains, named after the mining villages of Somerset.

Also in common with B.emiensis its stems and calyxes are beautifully flushed with a pinky orange. Cyclamen coum is the other cyclamen commonly grown out of doors in Britain. It is a little fussier than Cyclamen hederifolium but essentially requires quick drainage, good winter light with a little shade in the hottest part of the day come Spring and shelter from cold drying winds. It is very hardy but dislikes freezing or wet winds. Its marbled kidney-shaped leaves appear in September and persist until late Spring when higher temperatures and sunlight force the into a protective dormancy. The flowers are more dumpy and rounded than typical cyclamen flowers and come in a range of colours from white through pink to deep magenta, always with a darker blotch at the mouth of the paler eyes. They liven up the Winter garden, appearing as they do from Christmas onwards, being remarkably cold tolerant. Excellent for naturalising in sunny banks at the foot of trees, even conifers providing the branches don't come too close to the ground. Cyclamen hederifolium heralds the onset of Autumn when its charming pink or white reflexed flowers push their way above ground in late August. Cyclamen hederifolium is the easiest species to grow as it will withstand extreme cold and frozen conditions but also high summer temperatures when it is protected by its dormancy. They thrive in poor soil, make good companions to bulbs and will thrive anywhere that offers quick drainage and reasonable light (not overshadowed) when in leaf through Winter. The leaves make wonderful ground cover in many situations but especially in difficult dry areas under trees. They have wonderful marbled patterns and form close knit mats of thick textured ivy-shaped leaves, often with lovely purply reverses. The leaves arrive shortly after the flowers (in September) and persist through the dullest months until Summer heat drives them into dormancy. What is also not in doubt is that they die reliably in many people's gardens. At the root of this is the great British Winter climate. Echinaceas want moist roots and dry free flowing air; what we give them is a regular deluge followed by misty, muggy days. The consequence is fungal rots and a dead Coneflower. You can help by planting your Echinacea in an open situation where the breeze will keep the crown drier, but the stark reality is that Echinacea are not reliable in everyone's garden. Don't be confused by the name of this Geranium, it is named after a house, not one of it's characteristics. The flowers are some of the darkest of the group, being a rich pinky purple at the centre fading out towards pink at the edge with a white edge. Strong bee lines complete the design. Not quite as striking as Blueberry Ice, but still very nice indeed. Good for growing in dry shady situations where many plants would struggle. Raised by repeated selection of seedling forms by Lionel Bacon, past President of the Alpine Garden Society. Named after his garden.

Elsbeth has particularly large showy flowers (see comparison photograph) of a vivid deep magenta which stud the mounds of palmately dissected, rather hairy foliage over a long season from Summer to Autumn. It forms neat mounds which often colour beautifully in the Autumn. Best in Sunny, well drained situations. Apparently it was discovered on the Continent and is a relatively recent introduction. 30 x 30cm.

They come in such a wonderful variety of colour; whites through to pinks and blue-black purples, with some in shades of green and yellow. Many are beautifully spotted inside, but no two are ever identical. Nowadays there are a bewildering array of doubles to add to the mix. To me, this variety is distinguished by the contrast of the pale sugary-pink flowers against the dark purple ruff of bracts below the inflorescence. It is a long established variety which has gained itself an AGM, having a long flowering period and being a little less spreading than some. However when trialled in America alongside many other Monarda it scored poorly, especially in mildew resistence, but then again mildew is very much in the variety description of most Monarda. I refer you to my comments under Monarda 'Marshall's Delight'.

This variety is distinctive for its flowers of clear pink formed into relatively rounded flower heads. It was one of the first varieties to come out of a breeding program at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Morden, Manitoba who set out to concentrate on mildew resistance. It has achieved an AGM from the RHS and has an excellent reputation for mildew resistance, one endorsed by an evaluation program at the Chicago Botanic gardens. However, I would sound a note of caution. Another Monarda evaluation conducted by the Mount Cuba Center rated Marshall's Delight very poorly, mainly on account of it mildew susceptibility. This can probably be attributed to the varieties preference for certain climates. I think the moral is, try it, treat it nice and appreciate the lovely flowers. 1-1.5m tall

The only child of the genus Morina that finds a ready home in the English garden. This rare beuty from the Himalayas, has a rosette of bright glossy green thistle-like leaves which form an evergreen rosette in mild or sheltered gardens. If brushed against (mind the spikes) they emit an intriguing citrusy aroma, quite out of character with its appearance. In mid summer it sends up strong stems which carry delightful and curious whorls of thistly bracted tubular flowers. As the flowers open they are of the palest pink, almost white, but once fertilisation is achieved the flowers develop a rosy glow and eventually become quite deep pink, thus siganlling to the bees that the nectaries have been drained. This creates a beautiful multi-tonal effect. Morinas need decent drainage and really like gravel gardens where they can seed about gently. The tap roots resent disturbance so allow them to grow where they choose. Named in honour of Rene Morin, a French nurseryman who is hailed as being the first to produce a plant catalogue way back in 1621. Needs full sun, moist but well drained soil and a mild climate.

Primula vulgaris subsp. sibthorpii. (Primula acaulis subsp. rubra) These Primroses looks for all the world like our native Primrose which the fairies have painted pink. Their habit and flower shape are just the same but this subspecies hails from the eastern mediterranean and grows in similar shadier and cooler conditions to those that we associate with our own wild primrose. The flowers are usually purplish pink or rosy red and can flower from February to April.

Rheum palmatum 'Atrosanguineum'. A most dramatic plant with huge rhubarb leaves that unfurl darkest maroon from scarlet buds and then are topped by a 7-11 ft spike of pink fluffy flowers. Best grown in a damp site where the roots can find water. Our own selection, propagated clonally from a plant we selected out of seedlings many years ago - as deep a colour as we have seen anywhere.

This excellent variety was introduced by Keith Wiley. Having occurred in the Garden House, Buckland Monachorum it was a self sown seedling from R.pinnata 'Superba' that proved to have much darker pink flowers than the parent. Flowers start off with a deep red bud, emerge a pale sugar pink and gradually fade through red to the deep maroon and highly ornamental persistent calyces. The emergent leaves are beautifully bronzed, fading a deep green. We find that the flowers are almost identical to our R.pinnata 'Elegans' but it has a leaf that is narrower in the segments.

  • Rodgersia pinnata 'Elegans'. Handsome leaves for moist shade - According to Dan Hinckley, the best form of Rodgersia pinnata. Standing up to 3ft tall the leaves are rough in texture, well rounded in form, burnished when young and colouring excellently in autumn. The flowers are carried on broad pagodas, a fluffy cream base, well tinted rosy pink. When the flowers are over the seed cases make fine ruddy brown decorations. Originally selected form the garden of Helen Dillon in Ireland.

Salvia sclarea 'Turkestanica' (Clary) is a  magnificent show-stopping biennial to add impact to the garden. Large attractive rosettes of blue green foliage develop a branching flower head to 75cm tall in the second year. The flower are lavender with a white lip but the real stars of the show are the large showy white & pink bracts. Clary has been long cultivated both for ornament and flavour, having been used as a substitute for hops and to flavour wine. The names 'Clary' and 'sclarea' both derive form the Latin 'clarus' = clear; a reference to the use of the mucilaginous seeds to clear eyesight. The essential oil is often used in perfumery. This rather lovely cultivar, the only current full sized London Pride with a pink ground to the flower, has been around since the 1960's, though the introducer is not recorded and it may in reality be much older. It is comparable in size with London Pride (Saxifraga x umbrosa), maybe a little more robust, with darker leaves and longer stolons. The Inflorescence is of good size, at least 30cm tall with dark brick red stems and a cloud of pale pink flowers, darkened by a few red spots and deeper pink centres. Nicely red stained foliage in Winter.

Verbena bonariensis  has become a well deserved star of so many gardens as it produces such a long period of nectar rich flowers in a way that is both eye catching but light enough to see right through. Flowers from late summer onwards getting better and better as it goes as the heads get broader and broader. It is an absolute magnet for butterflies of all kinds.  Sunny position. It will replace itself from seed if conditions are suitable Although often treated as an annual owing to its ability to flower in its first year, Verbena bonariensis is perfectly well suited to more permanent plantings. Given good drainage it will withstand temperatures of -5C to -14C and will readily sow itself around from seed, especially into gravel.

This fascinating and unusual Verbena was discovered in the public garden in Bampton, Devon and has been identified as a variant of V.officinalis var. grandiflora which hails from S.Europe. Quite how it came to Devon is a mystery - perhaps seed travelled home as a holiday memento or on the feet of a bird. It is related to our native vervain. It emerges in Spring from a tight evergreen crown as dark purple shoots clothed with glossy, serrated purple leaves which have a real metallic sheen. The dark purple stems become wiry and branched making a twiggy bush about 2 feet high covered in tiny pink flowers over a very long period. For well drained soil in full sun. Vinca difformis is quite similar to Vinca major in many respects, differing most significantly in its habit of flowering right from Autumn, through mild Winter spells to Spring. We're a bit confused over this one. We bought this plant in micropropagated several years ago as Zantedeschia 'Flamingo', but is less fully pink than we expected. We are not sure if it was supposed to be the plant bred in the Netherlands by The Klaver Brothers, Theo and Kees for the cut flower trade, or another cultivar which vies for the name. Whichever, believe the pictures which show the plant that we have. It has the beautiful chalice form of Zantedeschia but coloured with a lovely soft sugar pink, especially on the outside. It is a vigorous grower that will bloom freely once established and cut beautifully (cut it as the bud opens). 80cm. For a warm sunny spot with access to plenty of moisture. The crowns are best protected with a deep mulch in the early years and otherwise if Winters turn very cold.
