To me, this Chrysanthemum shows the same qualities as C.'Innocence' in that it is so weatherproof. It puts up with wind, rain and even the first frosts without becoming scruffy. It puts on a show of its single pink blooms from October until as late as December in a good year. About 60cm high and with the usual lovely Chrysanthemum scent. reliable and long-lived.Links

Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum' - Bronze Fennel. Clumps of beautiful feathery bronze leaves build up to make impressive mounds that are a perfect foil for bold leaves such as Hostas. The stems grow 5-7 ft high and are topped with delicate yellow umbels that are equally ornamental. dead-head to prevent seeding. Galium odoratum (Sweet Woodruff). (Rubiaceae) . Sweet Woodruff. A british native that really earns its place in a shady spot. It will quickly form an open carpet of bright green whorled foliage, enlivened in Spring with brightest white starry flowers. The leaves when crushed are said to smell of newly made hay. Its an undemanding plant that performs brilliantly in the sort of dry shaded situations that can be troublesome to fill. Honey produced by bees feeding on the nectar of this plant has been reported to have effects similar to Manuka Honey, but as to what evidence there is to back this up I cannot say.Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over -

This variety was first discovered in a garden in Georgia, USA and has gone on to earn a reputation for being the very best of the red Bee Balms. It shows excellent (but not guaranteed) resistence to mildew and is a highly attractive to bees and hummingbirds, though I've not yet seen any of the latter here in Dorset. This variety is distinctive for its flowers of clear pink formed into relatively rounded flower heads. It was one of the first varieties to come out of a breeding program at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Morden, Manitoba who set out to concentrate on mildew resistance. It has achieved an AGM from the RHS and has an excellent reputation for mildew resistance, one endorsed by an evaluation program at the Chicago Botanic gardens. However, I would sound a note of caution. Another Monarda evaluation conducted by the Mount Cuba Center rated Marshall's Delight very poorly, mainly on account of it mildew susceptibility. This can probably be attributed to the varieties preference for certain climates. The only child of the genus Morina that finds a ready home in the English garden. This rare beuty from the Himalayas, has a rosette of bright glossy green thistle-like leaves which form an evergreen rosette in mild or sheltered gardens. If brushed against (mind the spikes) they emit an intriguing citrusy aroma, quite out of character with its appearance. In mid summer it sends up strong stems which carry delightful and curious whorls of thistly bracted tubular flowers. As the flowers open they are of the palest pink, almost white, but once fertilisation is achieved the flowers develop a rosy glow and eventually become quite deep pink, thus siganlling to the bees that the nectaries have been drained. This creates a beautiful multi-tonal effect. Morinas need decent drainage and really like gravel gardens where they can seed about gently. The tap roots resent disturbance so allow them to grow where they choose. Named in honour of Rene Morin, a French nurseryman who is hailed as being the first to produce a plant catalogue way back in 1621. Needs full sun, moist but well drained soil and a mild climate. -

Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant' is a must for the front of any sunny border where it produces with great reliability a 3-4ft wide mound of soft grey green foliage and a hazy cloud of lavender blue flowers which the bees and butterflies adore. Trim to encourage second flowering. Easy to grow and divide. A useful alternative to lavender for short hedging. This variety is more hardy combined with better damp tolerance than Nepeta faassenii. Nepeta grandiflora 'Bramdean' is a beautiful strong growing catmint with sprays of soft blue flowers set off by sea- green foliage. Lovely when grown beneath old roses. Similar in habit to Six Hills Giant, but a little larger and stouter, darker in flower and up to month later. Nepeta nervosa is a dense shrubby perennial flowering in late summer with short dense spikes of pure blue flowers. Best in well drained soil in full sun. Cut back after flowering. 30-60cm. This fairly recent introduction has at least three things to recommend it. To start with the flowers are a much richer shade of mauve than the usually found catmint and this plant has gained a reputation for being even freer in its reblooming also. The growth is a little more compact than normal as well, up to 30cm tall and twice as much wide. Nepeta x faassenii (mussinii of gardens, N.racemosa, N.mussinii x N.nepetella) Nepeta x faassenii produces sprays of lavender blue flowers from mid Summer until Autumn over short mounds of grey green foliage. An excellent alternative to lavender as a short hedge, brilliant below roses and good at the front of any border. Catmint deserves its popularity as a cottage garden stalwart. Trim to keep tidy and encourage a second flowering. 50cm. Excellent for the bees. Many plants grown in the trade as Nepeta racemosa are in fact this hybrid. Produces a low spreading mound completely obscured in late summer by the mass of rich pink flowers crammed in tight rounded heads. A sight only enhanced by all the butterflies it attracts. Grow it either on its own where it will produce a dome or close to other short perennials where it will mingle its blooms with theirs. Salvia sclarea 'Turkestanica' (Clary) is a magnificent show-stopping biennial to add impact to the garden. Large attractive rosettes of blue green foliage develop a branching flower head to 75cm tall in the second year. The flower are lavender with a white lip but the real stars of the show are the large showy white & pink bracts. Clary has been long cultivated both for ornament and flavour, having been used as a substitute for hops and to flavour wine.
