This is a great form of Hart's Tongue fern that is little seen. It was given to us years ago by Mike and Dilly Smith and it has been brightening the garden by our back door ever since, getting better by the year. It is a fine member of the Crispum Group with deeply ruffled edges to the leaves that are worthy enough on their own. However, given sufficient light, the leaves are a rich yellow for most of the Spring, only darkening to green late in the Summer. The light is essential to get the golden colour, but direct sun will cause the leaves to burn. In shade it will be entirely green, but somewhere in-between it can show partial yellowing or even variegated stripes. Asplenium Scolpendrium 'Bolton' is very similar. 30-40cm tall. It is sterile and difficult to propagate.

We've seen it written that Astrantia 'Ruby Wedding' makes it inferior to some of the clonally propagated ones out there, but we've not found that the case at all. The ones we have are every bit as rich in colour as Ruby Wedding and Hadspen Blood. They don't have the dark staining leaves of the Gill Richardson Group, but for flower alone they are a lovely deep red with flowers of a very decent size. Ruby Wedding has its origins at the RHS Wisley where it was selected as a superior seedling in a sowing of Astrantia major subsp. major. Its bracts are of a good size and are strongly red to purple in hue. It is the parent of the seed strain known as Claret which may or may not live up to its parents reputation. It i svery similar to Hadspen Blood which has a similar bloodline but was selected by Nori Pope of Hadspen Gardens.

Lesser Celandine. Gold-edged, bronze buds open to a typical celandine colour, the difference being that Ficaria verna 'Montacute' (Ranunculus ficaria) has 4 ruffs of petals, prettily incurved to reveal the contrasting bronzy reverse. The petals are neatly square-ended, almost as if they have been trimmed. Unlike 'Flore Pleno' the centres of the flowers are open revealing a green eye surrounded by a boss of orange anthers. The leaves are arrow shaped, green flecked with silver. A favourite of mine and one of the earliest to flower. Said to have been rescued from a verge in Montacute, Somerset in 1994 just prior to being destroyed in roadworks.

Lesser Celandine. Glossy Buttermilk petals, shaded purplish on the reverse set off by a central boss of double-cream stamens. Filipendula ulmaria 'Aurea'. Delightful small meadowsweet with bright butter yellow foliage and fluffy cream flowers. Neat and small, ideal at the edge of a water feature. Prefers a moisture retentive soil. Will grow in sun or shade, but it can scorch in full sun during the summer, especially if the soil dries. In shade it will retain its colouring all year, which is more lemony in shade than the brassier colour of the leaves in sun. 30-45cm.

This is one of those plants whose flowers warrant the closest of inspection as they posses the sort of intricate beauty that can easily get overlooked amongst some of their more brash cousins but which nevertheless is as exquisite as they come. Each flower is a translucent lavender-white shaded to the edges and picked out lavender in the veins. Where the petals overlap the colour is stronger and from the white eye protrude a green style and pink anthers. Typical green G.phaeum foliage with small but distinct chocolate spots. Purple Moor Grass is a British native, to be found on damp peaty sites where it grows rough, tough tussocks that are a nightmare to walk through. However, as a garden plant it has many merits. In its taller subspecies, subsp. arundinacea, it produces tall airy plumes of purple tinted flowers that are light and see through. The plants are tough and in Autumn they turn rich buttery tones that last well into the Autumn. Transparent lives up to its billing with particularly airy flowers in spikes up to 5ft high. It is particularly persistent into the Winter. Molinia like plenty of moisture and will tolerate a wide range of soil types from peaty to a reasonable amount of lime.
