    Lesser Celandine. Gold-edged, bronze buds open to a typical celandine colour, the difference being that Ficaria verna 'Montacute' (Ranunculus ficaria) has 4 ruffs of petals, prettily incurved to reveal the contrasting bronzy reverse. The petals are neatly square-ended, almost as if they have been trimmed. Unlike 'Flore Pleno' the centres of the flowers are open revealing a green eye surrounded by a boss of orange anthers. The leaves are arrow shaped, green flecked with silver. A favourite of mine and one of the earliest to flower. Said to have been rescued from a verge in Montacute, Somerset in 1994 just prior to being destroyed in roadworks.

    Geranium pratense Victor Reiter Strain. Stunning new cultivar with leaves of a striking purple-black above which deep purple saucer shaped blooms are proudly displayed. Place in a prominent position where the unusual many fingered leaves will always provoke comment. Not as high as some of the meadow cranesbills. Leaves become greener as the year progresses or if they are in too much shade. Best in sun. to 60cm. There was a profusion of cultivars produced following the original Californian introduction of G.'Vicor Reiter' which has led to some muddling and confusion in the names of the purple leaved strains, some of which are seed raised, and some micropropagated. This is one of the seed raised strains. originally bred by Californian nurseryman Victor Reiter in the 1970's

    Purple Moor Grass is a British native, to be found on damp peaty sites where it grows rough, tough tussocks that are a nightmare to walk through. However, as a garden plant it has many merits. In its taller subspecies, subsp. arundinacea, it produces tall airy plumes of purple tinted flowers that are light and see through. The plants are tough and in Autumn they turn rich buttery tones that last well into the Autumn. Transparent lives up to its billing with particularly airy flowers in spikes up to 5ft high. It is particularly persistent into the Winter. Molinia like plenty of moisture and will tolerate a wide range of soil types from peaty to a reasonable amount of lime.

    This is one of those plants that has really surprised us by how much we like it. It comes from a fairly robust genus where elegance is not usually the order of the day, but it really is a thing of great refinement. In habit it is fairly open and quite large growing at least 1m in each direction. The stems branch widely with each node bearing a long tapered leaf whose edge colours red, a colour that repeats into the long tapering flowering stems which are narrow and carry small starry white flowers which point and twist like those fireworks that whizz as they are sent skywards. An undemanding plant for a moist to wet soil and a must for the flower arranger. Good with Euphorbia 'Fireglow' or Schizostylis coccinea ''Major'

    This variety was a chance seedling identified by Alan Bloom. It is shorter than the species with an extended flowering season all the way from July through to November. The flowers are a rich magenta pink with electric blue stamens. Height 100cm (sometimes more) by 70cm wide. Very drought tolerant.

    Polystichum setiferum 'Plumosomultilobum' ( 'Plumosum Densum'). A dense crown produces a spiral of soft pale green fronds the segments of each of which is congested and overlapping creating an effect is like a feather. The newly emergant fronds, reddy-brown with a dense covering of translucent scales, are an absolute delight - well worth the effort of trimming away the old foliage. Easily grown and adaptable and one of the lovliest ferns. Tolerates quite dry soils. 100cm

    This variety is a cross made between R.aesculifolia and R.podophylla by Eric Smith and Jim Archibald at the Plantsman Nursery. The leaves are like R.podophylla except that they are longer in each segment relative to the width and larger overall. The ends of the leaves escecially will take on red tones during the Summer months, more so than R.podophylla under the same conditions. The impressive flower spike is tall, creamy white and columnar.

    Sanguisorba 'Chocolate Tip'. All the wow factor of 'Arnhem' and its smart little flowers but on a more modest scale of plant. The foliage still makes a luxurious mound but is finer in all its aspects than either 'Arnhem' or menziesii and shows a red midrib. The flowers are perhaps a shade darker and the flowering stems are plentiful and rise about 3 feet. It manages to make a statement in the border without adding too much weight.

    Sanguisorba officinalis 'Arnhem'. This variety is sure to evoke the curiosity of your neighbours when in Summer and Late Autumn the sumptuous green, pinnate and neatly saw-toothed foliage sends up its stems to 5 or 6 feet, each topped with a loose head of compact deep blood red cone flowers that dance and sway in the breeze. I first bought this plant at Hampton Court and spent the rest of the day being stopped by a legion of other visitors asking 'Ooh, where did you get that from ?' The foliage of 'Arnhem' is bright green and held quite upright.

Dorset Perennials – plants direct from the heart of Dorset.

At Dorset Perennials you will find a husband and wife team, Dawn and Martin, who have been plantsmen and nurserymen for nearly 25 years. Our nursery, situated in the North of Dorset close to the Somerset border, is full of the plants we love. There’s no overall theme, just an eclectic mix of perennials that, for one reason or another, we consider well worth growing. We have plants for shade, plants for sun, plants for wildlife and a few more just because. In short all the perennials you would ever need to make a garden full of colour throughout the year and full of the plants you need to make it hum with wildlife. We’ve tried to make this website full of inspirational colour and easy to use. The shop page has a nifty plant selector sidebar which can be used to filter our plants by size, colour season and so forth to help you quickly pin down the right plant for a particular spot.
