Given that the name Gypsophila comes from the greek for gypsum and philos meaning  loving there are no prizes for guessing that almost without exception Gypsophila are lime loving plants. Quite why that characteristic was the one to inspire the name in the face of the sheer quantity of billowy starry flowers the plants produce is anyone’s guess!

The genus consists of 100 species of annual, evergreen or semi evergreen mat forming perennials or deep rooted perennials. The alpine species occur in sparse turf or stony scree, whilst Gypsophila paniculata grows naturally in sandy places both on calcareous soils mostly in the Eastern Mediterraean and into Eastern Europe.

The alpine species are prized for the mounds or mats of evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage which are studded with or almost clothed with loose panicles of starry flowers in white, pink or a combination of the two which are ideal ground cover on the rockery or tumbling over walls in sunny spaces. Given good drainage they can be long lived and have a long flowering season.

The larger perennial species such as Gypsophila paniculata, so called Baby’s Breath, create wonderful clouds or mounds of dainty flowers in crowded panicles for the border or gravel garden where they make a superb foil for bolder flowers and make useful fillers for covering empty spaces left by bulbs. Gypsophila makes an excellent cut flower and can be dried very successfully. The sturdy deep rooting rootstocks resent winter wet which can induce rots so excellent drainage is essential. Gypsophila Rosenschleier is a cross between G. paniculata and alpine G. repens and makes a magnificent frothy mound up to 3 feet across in summer retracting to a tough rootstock in winter and is rather more tolerant of the Brtish winter and can be longer lived
