There is  a peak in slug egg laying in December when they lay eggs in places where their young can feed well. Sort of having your babies in the larder. Hence they often lay in the crowns of plants like Delphinium. The young slugs hatch just as the new shoots start to grow and off they munch. This is why your Delphinium often fails to appear – its being eaten before it ever gets out of the ground. Hence, slug pellet at Christmas for best results.
