Chineses Foxglove. A rosette of broad, soft-haired leaves give rise to a very handsome spike of rich pink gloxinia-like trumpet shaped flowers of 2 foot stems, reminiscent of a foxglove. The flowers have yellow spotted throats giving a very tropical effect. May to July. Well drained, even stony poor ground suits this plant in full sun or shade. It is very cold tolerant in dry conditions but the downy leaves can succumb to moulds in warm, wet winters. Hence it is best given protection to keep the foliage dry in Winter or treated as a biennal. The roots are an important ingredient in Chinese medicine.
