A very distinctive grass, notable for the range of colour in the foliage which is striped in shades of orange and brown, more so as the season goes on and best when the plant is a little stressed. A pretty quaking grass with tidy mounds of soft glaucous leaves with handsome white edges and striping. In Summer, dainty wands of little dancing lockets are produced which sway in the breeze. Green-white at first and often tinged with pink, the seed heads become golden with age. Semi-evergreen clumps of leaves. Not a very long lived plant but careful regular division can extend its life. Feather Reed Grass. This fine variety was named after the distinguished German nurseryman Karl Foerster (1874-1970) who selected and introduced it. It is a sterile hybrid (C.arundinacea x C.epigejos) and forms a narrow column, 60cm high in leaf and 150cm plus in flower. The flower spikes are narrow feathery plumes, purpley green to start, ageing a lovely golden shade in Autumn and persisting well into the Winter. It will tolerate a wide range of soils, including heavy clay and compacted soils and whilst it prefers a sunny drier site, it will tolerate a wet site well. Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'George Davison'. A relatively short and lovely montbretia (40cm) with yellow starry flowers. It is also one of the first to flower.. This plant, carrying the name of the first significant breeder of Crocosmia in England, has a confused history. The plant we now grow is actually the original ‘Norwich Canary’, a short cultivar in a warm rich orange yellow, opening from apricot buds. It is vigorous and free to flower. The original cultivar, now possibly lost, was introduced in 1900 ‘Golden Sheaf’ x (crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Golden Sheaf’) and was Large, early, golden yellow, 8-10 branched. Vigorous. 90cm. It has a similar colouring to C.'Buttercup', with the main difference being the red calyces and coloured stems. A quite distinctive colouring and contrast making a fantastic bloom that is quite large. The standards are like parchment, the style arms quite pearly, mostly white but shaded to the base in lavender. The falls have the most intricate patterning, overall yellow but with the veins picked out in purple , each very striking, bold and single near the throat, paling and branching towards the sepal edge so that the fall has a strong yellow margin, surrounding a soft lilac-brown haze and bold yellow throat. Bred by Jennifer Hewitt and named in honour of her son-in-law. A cracking variety with rich glowing magenta falls, deepening to purple as you move towards the richly marked throat. Beautiful mid violet-blue flowers with the fall petals being etched with intricate netting over the base of each fall petal which start yellow nearest the stalk, graduating to white and finally blue as they round out. The standards are of a deep denim blue, delicately veined. A good 'do-er' this Iris is happy in any moist soil, pond margin or open border, even tolerating quite dry conditions when established (our's is under a beech hedge!). They will stand full sun to partial shade but shade will diminish the number of flowers produced. Plentiful strap-like foliage making a substantial clump, best divided in August every three or so years to maintain good flowering. 60-75cm. May to June.
