A quite distinctive colouring and contrast making a fantastic bloom that is quite large. The standards are like parchment, the style arms quite pearly, mostly white but shaded to the base in lavender. The falls have the most intricate patterning, overall yellow but with the veins picked out in purple , each very striking, bold and single near the throat, paling and branching towards the sepal edge so that the fall has a strong yellow margin, surrounding a soft lilac-brown haze and bold yellow throat. Beautiful mid violet-blue flowers with the fall petals being etched with intricate netting over the base of each fall petal which start yellow nearest the stalk, graduating to white and finally blue as they round out. The standards are of a deep denim blue, delicately veined. A good 'do-er' this Iris is happy in any moist soil, pond margin or open border, even tolerating quite dry conditions when established (our's is under a beech hedge!). They will stand full sun to partial shade but shade will diminish the number of flowers produced. Plentiful strap-like foliage making a substantial clump, best divided in August every three or so years to maintain good flowering. 60-75cm. May to June. To me, this variety is distinguished by the contrast of the pale sugary-pink flowers against the dark purple ruff of bracts below the inflorescence. It is a long established variety which has gained itself an AGM, having a long flowering period and being a little less spreading than some. However when trialled in America alongside many other Monarda it scored poorly, especially in mildew resistence, but then again mildew is very much in the variety description of most Monarda. An excellent introduction from White Flower Farm. Said to have excellent mildew resistance this variety has flowers that stride that middle ground between pink and red. In bud the flower heads have more than a passing resemblance to raspberries. It is undemanding, growing in a wide range of conditions. It is tolerant of quite wet sites and will grow where it is much drier, but somewhere in the middle is best. Give it full sun for best flowering and to best get the scent of the leaves. Quite distinct for a Nepeta in that it forms a dense upright bush rather than a lax mound of foliage, standing up well despite the elements. The flowers appear in a dense terminal cluster, quite large and standing proud above the foliage. The flowers are more in the style of Nepeta 'Souvenir d'Andre Chaudron' or a Dracocephalum, long like a Salvia and a strong mauvy-blue. This is a hybrid between N.yunnanensis and N.nervosa, a recent cross made by Janet Egger (Terra Nova Nurseries). 80cmLinks

Sensitive Fern. I really like this fern. Its quite different in that the fronds are quite simple with broad wavy edged pinnules. It is always a pale yellowy green, often with a red edge. The fronds stand upright from the ground coming from a creeping, running rhizome. It has an absolute requirement fro a moist to wet soil. Very hardy and fully deciduous. This is our splendid native Royal Fern. Whilst the frond are a little simpler than many ferns, being just bi-pinnate, their scale makes this a very fine site. A well grown specimen can easily, if slowly, reach 1.5m in height for which it really needs a position next to water. It has a desire for a wet position, but will tolerate an ordinary site, though with consequent lack of stature. Sometime this fern is called the flowering fern, a name it gets from the fact that the fertile fronds are quite different from normal, being reduced and held erect in the middle of the crown.
