Primula elatior (Oxlip). The wild form of our native Oxlip. From early spring a rosette of apple green foliage emerges which in april or may sends up stems from 10 to 30cm which are topped with a one sided umbel of short stalked primrose flowers. It was once prolific in eastern England from London to Cambridge and into Norfolk, where it was synonymous with acient woodland coppices and grew in large numbers, replacing the common primrose. Primula veris. Our native Cowslip hardly needs an introduction but sadly its native homes are becoming less common. Charming native primula with lopsided clusters of bright cheery yellow flowers on short stems. Excellent for naturalising in banks or meadows ideally in sunny situations on well drained alkaline soils. In wetter, heavier or shadier spots Primula vulgaris our native primrose is more likely to suceed. A superb Sedum with smoky beetroot coloured foliage. Spotted by Graham Gough of Marchants Nursery in his parent's garden in East Sussex. Bees adore this plant, spending weeks visiting the mass of rosy pink flowers stary flowers. It has a compact habit, growing 35-50cm tall, flowering in July to September. Lovely as a foliage plant or to observe the insects that are drwn to the flowers - this year we had the pleasure of watching hornets (native) hunting bees over our sedums. They take time selecting a victim and once they pounce they wrestle it until they can bite it behind the head, flying off with the bee held facing forward. From a dark shining rosette of leaves arise several stems bearing relatively long-stalked white flowers with a soft fluttery edge. A relatively short lived variety. 60cm. May to August. Commonly known as the purple mullein, the parents of this plant hail form Southern Europe and Asia, growing to 60cm in flower which they do in the early part of Summer. It will self seed in the garden if happy but may not always throw whites unless carefully isolated as it hails from genes which display violets, purples and pinks in the flower. The phoeniceum hybrids are thought to have been one of the original parents back in the 1930's of the taller, very pretty Cotswold Hybrids such as 'Gainsborough' and 'Pink Domino'. Vinca difformis 'Jenny Pym'. This Vinca grows two sorts of shoots, hence its name difformis. One shoot is long and barren, the other much shorter, upright up to 30cm tall and bears the flowers. These upright shoots are clustered and in this form carry pink flowers with a distinct white central region. Vinca difformis is quite similar to Vinca major in many respects, differing most significantly in its habit of flowering right from Autumn, through mild Winter spells to Spring. Its makes excellent ground cover in almost any soil short of a bog, growing in sun or shade. The small leaves are a deep rich green and a lovely setting for the pale sky blue flowers which are produced in the Spring. The foliage is a little larger than in 'Gertrude Jekyll'. Viola 'Bournemouth Gem' ( violet ). A selection of our native sweet violet bred especially to produce violets for the trade in cut flower posies. The flowers are exceptionally large with an open wide form and are borne on long stems above the partially evergreen foliage. Unfortunately the price of the large flowers is that the scent has been largely lost from this variety, one of the Devon Violets. Back at the turn of last century, the area around Dawlish, Devon was famous for producing violets for the cut flower and perfume trade. Viola riviniana Purpurea Group ( Viola labradorica ). This is an excellent edging plant, its dark purple leaves forming an excellent foil for its own violet flowers as well as those of many other perennials. It spreads well to cover the ground and I've seen it looking lovely running along the base of a wall and along the edges of a set of stone steps. Once a rarity, this large impressive fern from North America is now much more commonly seen. It comes form the Western Coastal region of North America, from British Columbia right down to California. The relatively narrow fronds are held mostly erect and will reach about a metre in length. In the wild they can reach 2m (even reports of 3m) but in our climate 1m is more realistic. To get the very best, Woodwardia fimbriata would prefer a moist soil, moist atmosphere with warm Summers and mild Winters. Give it time as well as it is slow to settle and increase, but the wait and patience will be worth it as it is a most impressive fern. Cold tolerance should go down to about -10C. Unlike some Woodwardia the new growth of this species is green and it also lacks the bulbils that some species carry.
