This rather lovely cultivar, the only current full sized London Pride with a pink ground to the flower, has been around since the 1960's, though the introducer is not recorded and it may in reality be much older. It is comparable in size with London Pride (Saxifraga x umbrosa), maybe a little more robust, with darker leaves and longer stolons. The Inflorescence is of good size, at least 30cm tall with dark brick red stems and a cloud of pale pink flowers, darkened by a few red spots and deeper pink centres. Nicely red stained foliage in Winter.

The perfect plant for edging a path or covering the ground in a difficult dry spot. London Pride produces smothering mats of pale green rosettes which carry airy red flower stems of small pale pink flowers in May and June. You can always tell an old favourite Cottage Garden plant by the number of common names it goes by. Try some of these for size and then pick your favourite. London Pride, Lady's Pride, St. Patrick's cabbage, Whimsey, Prattling Parnell, and Look Up And Kiss Me. Easy and rewarding.

Autumn Moor Grass. As semi-evergreen grass which is native to South-Eastern regions of Europe. It is chiefly grown as a foil for other perennials on account of the pale yellow-green tint of its foliage which provides a bright accent in any scheme. Growth tends to be in the cooler seasons of Spring and Autumn with the Summer showing little foliage growth. However Summer does bring flowering with a flush of short silvery white brushes. Will grow in sun or semi-shade. 60cm

An unusual form of our native Devil's Bit Scabious with buttermilk yellow, buttton-like pin-cushion flowers. For a moist soil in sun or partial shade. July to October. 80cm Good for any damp planting and useful in meadow schemes where a Spring meadow management regime can be applied. The flowers are cream buttons held on stiflfy branching stems. Particularly effective en masse. Grows on slightly acid to calcareous soils. A wildflower that can holds its own in the border. The curious common name, Devil's Bit Scabious has two roots. Scabious derives from the use of the plant to cure skin ailments such as scabies and even those from the bubonic plague, (Scabere is the Latin for scratch). 'Devil's Bit' derives from folk tales of the Devil biting off the short black roots in his anger at the plants medicinal abilities.

Succisella 'Frosted Pearl'. This is Balkan species, a relative of our own native Devil's Bit Scabious, and like it an inhabitant of wet meadows. It flowers earlier than Succisia, usually by early August and tends to be denser and less airy than its British counterpart. 60cm. The flowers are pearly white with just a hint of pinkish lavender and are a great nectar source for all sorts of insects.

Deeply incised palmate leaves with the 'fingers' cut 3/4 of the way to the palm. All sections are strongly marked giving the whole leaf the suggestion of a purple black star with green margins. Colouring is Apple green on the young leaves, becoming dark green and textured with age. Flowers typical, little white stars with long exerted anthers tipped with orange pollen. The stems are suffused with rosy purple which pervades the buds giving the top of the pyramidal spike a warm glow.

Possibly the tallest of all the Trollius, standing up to twice as tall as some of its European counterparts. The flowers stand up high and proud above the glossy dark foliage, 2 inches across, wide open with a central blazing cage of narrow petaloid segments. With the glowing orange colour it reminds me of a the Olympic cauldron in full blaze. It is a native of high rainfall areas in Northern China up through Siberia and so wants a cool constantly moist position to thrive. Reliable and hardy and excellent by a pond where it will never fail to get noticed when in flower in May. 90cm

It grows about half the height of the species, but like it has lovely clear lemon yellow flowers produced freely in Spring. 30cm. Whilst Trollius will grow in the open border, they only produce their best when given access to moisture at all times. They are best suited to the edges of ponds where the roots can seek out water.

At first impressions it looks a lot like Vinca major with its large fresh green foliage; that is until mid October, when it is studded with large, palest pearly blue periwinkle flowers which appear throughout Winter into early Spring. The flowers age to pure white. Its Mediterranean roots do make it somewhat tender. It is reliable in the South West but in less favourable climates it requires the shelter of a warm wall. It appreciates some sun. A charming Winter plant. 30 x 60cm, spreading. Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over

Vinca difformis 'Jenny Pym'. This Vinca grows two sorts of shoots, hence its name difformis. One shoot is long and barren, the other much shorter, upright up to 30cm tall and bears the flowers. These upright shoots are clustered and in this form carry pink flowers with a distinct white central region. Vinca difformis is quite similar to Vinca major in many respects, differing most significantly in its habit of flowering right from Autumn, through mild Winter spells to Spring. Vinca difformis is not as hardy as the more common species but is reliable in the South West and good elsewhere with the shelter of a wall. Discount of 25p per plant for quantities of 3 or over

Viola 'Bournemouth Gem' ( violet ). A selection of our native sweet violet bred especially to produce violets for the trade in cut flower posies. The flowers are exceptionally large with an open wide form and are borne on long stems above the partially evergreen foliage. Unfortunately the price of the large flowers is that the scent has been largely lost from this variety, one of the Devon Violets. Back at the turn of last century, the area around Dawlish, Devon was famous for producing violets for the cut flower and perfume trade.  It grows in much more open clumps than Viola odorata and has distinctive veined, heart-shaped leaves which are a litle glossy. Grows in shade or sun. Prefers a moist soil

Once a rarity, this large impressive fern from North America is now much more commonly seen. It comes form the Western Coastal region of North America, from British Columbia right down to California. The relatively narrow fronds are held mostly erect and will reach about a metre in length. In the wild they can reach 2m (even reports of 3m) but in our climate 1m is more realistic. To get the very best, Woodwardia fimbriata would prefer a moist soil, moist atmosphere with warm Summers and mild Winters. Give it time as well as it is slow to settle and increase, but the wait and patience will be worth it as it is a most impressive fern. Cold tolerance should go down to about -10C. Unlike some Woodwardia the new growth of this species is green and it also lacks the bulbils that some species carry.

This is a relatively new cultivar which has come from New Zealand. The flowers are more upward facing than the standard Zantedeschia, slightly shorter and posses a lovely carmine glow to the base. In shape they tend more towards a Calla lily, more funnel shaped with less of a broad flare. Reports are that it is as hardy as Green Goddess, which we have had outside for many years, and that it will take a little more dryness than usual. Like all Zantedeschis it is best to cover younger plants with a generous mulch until they are well established. 60cm
  • Potsize - 1L

We're a bit confused over this one. We bought this plant in micropropagated several years ago as Zantedeschia 'Flamingo', but is less fully pink than we expected. We are not sure if it was supposed to be the plant bred in the Netherlands by The Klaver Brothers, Theo and Kees for the cut flower trade, or another cultivar which vies for the name. Whichever, believe the pictures which show the plant that we have. It has the beautiful chalice form of Zantedeschia but coloured with a lovely soft sugar pink, especially on the outside. It is a vigorous grower that will bloom freely once established and cut beautifully (cut it as the bud opens). 80cm. For a warm sunny spot with access to plenty of moisture. The crowns are best protected with a deep mulch in the early years and otherwise if Winters turn very cold.
