A lovely variety with leaves that begin the year a rich bronze in colour. This colour fades as the flower stems develop so that by the time the plant is in full flower the leaves have toned down to a rich dark green with just the flower stems showing a purple flush. However the contrast of dark leaves and shining sunshine yellow flowers as they first emerge from the buds is a most beautiful thing. A variety that deserves to become well known. Marsh Marigolds are amongst the first flowers of Spring, flowering throughout the month of April.

There are two factors that set this lovely variety apart, its size and its colouring. It is larger than the species and perhaps a little more upright with leaves that are of a fresher paler green, held on pink stained petioles. The flowers, which are also large, are of a bright lemon yellow rather than the more chrome yellows of most varieties. Will root from the nodes on the flower stems. Can be planted on the pond margin or just into the water. 45cm. Marsh Marigolds are amongst the first flowers of Spring, flowering throughout the month of April.

As Marsh Marigolds go this one is relatively compact in growth, shorter in all its parts. However it is the flowers that are the chief attraction. They start off looking like a normal Marsh Marigold with the tightest anemone centre you could imagine. Then, as the flowers age, the centre petals grow out until you have a full blown miniature pom-pom dahlia of a flower in rich glowing gold. 30cm spread. Marsh Marigolds are amongst the first flowers of Spring, flowering throughout the month of April.

A quite distinctive colouring and contrast making a fantastic bloom that is quite large. The standards are like parchment, the style arms quite pearly, mostly white but shaded to the base in lavender. The falls have the most intricate patterning, overall yellow but with the veins picked out in purple , each very striking, bold and single near the throat, paling and branching towards the sepal edge so that the fall has a strong yellow margin, surrounding a soft lilac-brown haze and bold yellow throat. Mid season. 90cm Introduced : 2000 Bob Bauer/John Cable. This variety is classified as having blooms of a rich rose-wine, but I think the words rosy-violet would be more descriptive. The blooms are very full and a little chaotic in their arrangement, but the splash of rich colour they produce is not to be ignored. The falls are well marked in the throat with white, yellow and red netting.

Lobelia siphilitica

Great Blue Lobelia, Blue Cardinal Flower. This is quite a tough, hardy and reliable Lobelia which, although not long lived, will cheerfully seed itself around any bit of wet ground. The flower spikes are relatively dense, up to 3 feet tall and are crowded with flowers of a really intense sky blue. It comes from moist to wet soils in Canada and North America and will grow in sun or shade. Its specific epithet 'siphilitica' comes from its supposed efficacy in curing the disease Syphilis, for which it was prescribed by the North American Indians. However all parts of the plant are in fact rather toxic if eaten and really quite dangerous in large quantities.

Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea ‘Transparent’

Purple Moor Grass is a British native, to be found on damp peaty sites where it grows rough, tough tussocks that are a nightmare to walk through. However, as a garden plant it has many merits. In its taller subspecies, subsp. arundinacea, it produces tall airy plumes of purple tinted flowers that are light and see through. The plants are tough and in Autumn they turn rich buttery tones that last well into the Autumn. Transparent lives up to its billing with particularly airy flowers in spikes up to 5ft high. It is particularly persistent into the Winter. Molinia like plenty of moisture and will tolerate a wide range of soil types from peaty to a reasonable amount of lime.

Rodgersia ‘Parasol’

This variety is a cross made between R.aesculifolia and R.podophylla by Eric Smith and Jim Archibald at the Plantsman Nursery. The leaves are like R.podophylla except that they are longer in each segment relative to the width and larger overall. The ends of the leaves escecially will take on red tones during the Summer months, more so than R.podophylla under the same conditions. The impressive flower spike is tall, creamy white and columnar.

Rodgersia aesculifolia

As its name suggests, the leaves of this Rodgersia are like the Horse Chestnut. Like podophylla, they are palmate, with all the leaflets arising from a central point but unlike it the leaf ends are much more rounded with the whole leaf outline being round too. They can be up to 50cm across. The flowers are white and are carried in a lax arching panicle on rusty stems up to 2m long. Farrer, who first saw this in Western China described it as a magnificent sight with huge clumps of large metallic leaves. There are many forms of this species in cultivation.

An unusual form of our native Devil's Bit Scabious with buttermilk yellow, buttton-like pin-cushion flowers. For a moist soil in sun or partial shade. July to October. 80cm Good for any damp planting and useful in meadow schemes where a Spring meadow management regime can be applied. The flowers are cream buttons held on stiflfy branching stems. Particularly effective en masse. Grows on slightly acid to calcareous soils. A wildflower that can holds its own in the border. The curious common name, Devil's Bit Scabious has two roots. Scabious derives from the use of the plant to cure skin ailments such as scabies and even those from the bubonic plague, (Scabere is the Latin for scratch). 'Devil's Bit' derives from folk tales of the Devil biting off the short black roots in his anger at the plants medicinal abilities.

Trollius chinensis ‘Golden Queen’

Possibly the tallest of all the Trollius, standing up to twice as tall as some of its European counterparts. The flowers stand up high and proud above the glossy dark foliage, 2 inches across, wide open with a central blazing cage of narrow petaloid segments. With the glowing orange colour it reminds me of a the Olympic cauldron in full blaze. It is a native of high rainfall areas in Northern China up through Siberia and so wants a cool constantly moist position to thrive. Reliable and hardy and excellent by a pond where it will never fail to get noticed when in flower in May. 90cm

A vigorous but compact form of our native Globeflower introduced by Jelitto in 2010. It grows about half the height of the species, but like it has lovely clear lemon yellow flowers produced freely in Spring. 30cm. Whilst Trollius will grow in the open border, they only produce their best when given access to moisture at all times. They are best suited to the edges of ponds where the roots can seek out water.

Zantedeschia ‘Kiwi Blush’

This is a relatively new cultivar which has come from New Zealand. The flowers are more upward facing than the standard Zantedeschia, slightly shorter and posses a lovely carmine glow to the base. In shape they tend more towards a Calla lily, more funnel shaped with less of a broad flare. Reports are that it is as hardy as Green Goddess, which we have had outside for many years, and that it will take a little more dryness than usual. Like all Zantedeschis it is best to cover younger plants with a generous mulch until they are well established. 60cm

Zantedeschia aethiopica ‘Flamingo’

We're a bit confused over this one. We bought this plant in micropropagated several years ago as Zantedeschia 'Flamingo', but is less fully pink than we expected. We are not sure if it was supposed to be the plant bred in the Netherlands by The Klaver Brothers, Theo and Kees for the cut flower trade, or another cultivar which vies for the name. Whichever, believe the pictures which show the plant that we have. It has the beautiful chalice form of Zantedeschia but coloured with a lovely soft sugar pink, especially on the outside. It is a vigorous grower that will bloom freely once established and cut beautifully (cut it as the bud opens). 80cm. For a warm sunny spot with access to plenty of moisture. The crowns are best protected with a deep mulch in the early years and otherwise if Winters turn very cold.
