Can be grown in a sunny border, where it will make a substantial clump, or in a wilder setting in dappled shade. 60cm tall by as much wide if space and nutrition allows. Will flower on and on from early summer onwards.

    An unusual form of our native Devil's Bit Scabious with buttermilk yellow, buttton-like pin-cushion flowers. For a moist soil in sun or partial shade. July to October. 80cm Good for any damp planting and useful in meadow schemes where a Spring meadow management regime can be applied. The flowers are cream buttons held on stiflfy branching stems. Particularly effective en masse. Grows on slightly acid to calcareous soils. A wildflower that can holds its own in the border. The curious common name, Devil's Bit Scabious has two roots. Scabious derives from the use of the plant to cure skin ailments such as scabies and even those from the bubonic plague, (Scabere is the Latin for scratch). 'Devil's Bit' derives from folk tales of the Devil biting off the short black roots in his anger at the plants medicinal abilities.

    Thalictrum flavum 'Illuminator' is a handsome background plant to 5' (1.5m). The foliage is divided into broad leaflets and emerges in spring lemon yellow with a brief red flush. The Foliage then spends the spring golden yellow, gradually fading  to blue-green by summer by which time the tall flowering stems are topped with their fluffy lemon yellow flowers. Brilliant to lighten a dark corner. Best with moisture in the soil. An old variety which was known before 1915

    Vinca minor 'La Grave' ('Bowles's Variety'). Vinca minor is the lesser Periwinkle, the smaller of the two species most commonly found. Its makes excellent ground cover in almost any soil short of a bog, growing in sun or shade. The small leaves are a deep rich green and a lovely setting for the pale sky blue flowers which are produced in the Spring. The foliage is a little larger than in 'Gertrude Jekyll'.     Viola 'Bournemouth Gem' ( violet ). A selection of our native sweet violet bred especially to produce violets for the trade in cut flower posies. The flowers are exceptionally large with an open wide form and are borne on long stems above the partially evergreen foliage. Unfortunately the price of the large flowers is that the scent has been largely lost from this variety, one of the Devon Violets. Back at the turn of last century, the area around Dawlish, Devon was famous for producing violets for the cut flower and perfume trade.  It grows in much more open clumps than Viola odorata and has distinctive veined, heart-shaped leaves which are a litle glossy. Grows in shade or sun. Prefers a moist soil

This is an excellent edging plant, its dark purple leaves forming an excellent foil for its own violet flowers as well as those of many other perennials. It spreads well to cover the ground and I've seen it looking lovely running along the base of a wall and along the edges of a set of stone steps. This is the dark purple leaved form of our native wood violet. It is easily pleased and will grow in sun or shade in a wide range of soil types.

Dorset Perennials – plants direct from the heart of Dorset.

At Dorset Perennials you will find a husband and wife team, Dawn and Martin, who have been plantsmen and nurserymen for nearly 25 years. Our nursery, situated in the North of Dorset close to the Somerset border, is full of the plants we love. There’s no overall theme, just an eclectic mix of perennials that, for one reason or another, we consider well worth growing. We have plants for shade, plants for sun, plants for wildlife and a few more just because. In short all the perennials you would ever need to make a garden full of colour throughout the year and full of the plants you need to make it hum with wildlife. We’ve tried to make this website full of inspirational colour and easy to use. The shop page has a nifty plant selector sidebar which can be used to filter our plants by size, colour season and so forth to help you quickly pin down the right plant for a particular spot.
