Long arching ‘fishing rods’ carry beautiful pendulous bells which sway in the breeze above tough narrow grass-like foliage. As the name suggests, the bells are deep maroon. The wands of flowers are tall and strong, up to 3 feet high, but never need staking. They flower from July to August.

Description

Dierama pulcherrimum ‘Blackbird’

Long arching ‘fishing rods’ carry beautiful pendulous bells which sway in the breeze above tough narrow grass-like foliage. As the name suggests, the bells are deep maroon. The wands of flowers are tall and strong, up to 3 feet high, but never need staking. They flower from July to August.

Notable is the way that the flowers open from the base to the tip of the stem. They hail from damp grassland and resent drying out. They look at their best arching over water. They are slow to establish and resent disturbance, but don’t let that put you off – they are well worth the effort.

Wandflower, Angel’s Fishing Rod.
