The anemone-relative Hepatica reaches its greatest diversity of flower colour and form in Japan, where Hepatica nobilis var. japonica has been prized for hundreds of years.  The Japanese Hepatica Society recognises nine categories of flower shape – from single through semi-doubles to fully ‘filled’ flowers – and the newest and most coveted sell for many thousands of pounds.  For the past two decades, an increasing range of varieties have reached European gardens, sought after by an ever- widening band of devotees.  Various growers in the UK have had considerable success growing these plants in a shady spot in the open garden, but most prefer to grow them in pots, where their enormous diversity of flower shapes and colours can be appreciated to the full.
