Primula florindae (himalayan cowslip). A primula that combines great poise and charm with stalwart reliability. From a stout clump of rounded leaves come 60-90cm stems from which hang an ever increasing number of pale lemon fragrant flowers dusted on the outside with a pale yellow farina. The scent is the most delicious and complex of any of the primulas, rich and heady like a sweet nose full of Pears soap. I think it ranks as one of the best perfumes of the year - right up there with the best of the roses and so easy to grow as well. Any moist to soggy soil. This variety is a cross made between R.aesculifolia and R.podophylla by Eric Smith and Jim Archibald at the Plantsman Nursery. The leaves are like R.podophylla except that they are longer in each segment relative to the width and larger overall. The ends of the leaves escecially will take on red tones during the Summer months, more so than R.podophylla under the same conditions. As its name suggests, the leaves of this Rodgersia are like the Horse Chestnut. Like podophylla, they are palmate, with all the leaflets arising from a central point but unlike it the leaf ends are much more rounded with the whole leaf outline being round too. They can be up to 50cm across. The flowers are white and are carried in a lax arching panicle on rusty stems up to 2m long. Farrer, who first saw this in Western China described it as a magnificent sight with huge clumps of large metallic leaves. There are many forms of this species in cultivation. -

A fantastic foliage plant for a moist position in plenty of space. Each leaf is palmate, up to 30cm plus across, with 5 leaflets that end in a squared off apex with three pointed drip tips. In Spring the leaves emerge beautifully bronzed, a colour that fades to a fresh apple green as the season progresses. Given time it will spread to a substantial clump. This rather lovely cultivar, the only current full sized London Pride with a pink ground to the flower, has been around since the 1960's, though the introducer is not recorded and it may in reality be much older. It is comparable in size with London Pride (Saxifraga x umbrosa), maybe a little more robust, with darker leaves and longer stolons. The Inflorescence is of good size, at least 30cm tall with dark brick red stems and a cloud of pale pink flowers, darkened by a few red spots and deeper pink centres. Nicely red stained foliage in Winter. -

This is a British Native that is becoming sadly rarer as its native habitats are ploughed up for arable crops and its foothold on the road verges declines with indifferent verge managemnet regimes (Do check out Plantlife's campaign to influence better roadside management). Possibly the tallest of all the Trollius, standing up to twice as tall as some of its European counterparts. The flowers stand up high and proud above the glossy dark foliage, 2 inches across, wide open with a central blazing cage of narrow petaloid segments. With the glowing orange colour it reminds me of a the Olympic cauldron in full blaze. It is a native of high rainfall areas in Northern China up through Siberia and so wants a cool constantly moist position to thrive. From a dark shining rosette of leaves arise several stems bearing relatively long-stalked white flowers with a soft fluttery edge. A relatively short lived variety. 60cm. May to August. Commonly known as the purple mullein, the parents of this plant hail form Southern Europe and Asia, growing to 60cm in flower which they do in the early part of Summer. It will self seed in the garden if happy but may not always throw whites unless carefully isolated as it hails from genes which display violets, purples and pinks in the flower. The phoeniceum hybrids are thought to have been one of the original parents back in the 1930's of the taller, very pretty Cotswold Hybrids such as 'Gainsborough' and 'Pink Domino'. Verbena bonariensis has stiff tall stems up to 6ft, crowned with ever expanding heads of pinky mauve flowers. Verbena bonariensis has become a well deserved star of so many gardens as it produces such a long period of nectar rich flowers in a way that is both eye catching but light enough to see right through. Flowers from late summer onwards getting better and better as it goes as the heads get broader and broader. It is an absolute magnet for butterflies of all kinds. Sunny position. It will replace itself from seed if conditions are suitable Although often treated as an annual owing to its ability to flower in its first year, Verbena bonariensis is perfectly well suited to more permanent plantings. This fascinating and unusual Verbena was discovered in the public garden in Bampton, Devon and has been identified as a variant of V.officinalis var. grandiflora which hails from S.Europe. Quite how it came to Devon is a mystery - perhaps seed travelled home as a holiday memento or on the feet of a bird. It is related to our native vervain. It emerges in Spring from a tight evergreen crown as dark purple shoots clothed with glossy, serrated purple leaves which have a real metallic sheen. The dark purple stems become wiry and branched making a twiggy bush about 2 feet high covered in tiny pink flowers over a very long period. For well drained soil in full sun.
