    Red Feather. This is possibly the showiest of all the clovers. It is fairly upright in growth with long terminal heads of flowers. The heads are downy and silvery in bud opening from the base upwards with rich ruby-red peas. Likes sunlight but dislikes extremes of temperature. Grow with adequate moisture in a slightly alkaline soil for best results. Non-invasive. Flowers late summer. Like all the clovers, nectar rich and therefore a magnet for the bees.

    The flowers on this form of European Clover are absolutely brilliant white, contrasting well with the rich dark green of the foliage. Native to Europe right down to the Mediterranean, growing in dry grassland and at woodland edges.

    From a dark shining rosette of leaves arise several stems bearing relatively long-stalked white flowers with a soft fluttery edge. A relatively short lived variety. 60cm. May to August. Commonly known as the purple mullein, the parents of this plant hail form Southern Europe and Asia, growing to 60cm in flower which they do in the early part of Summer. It will self seed in the garden if happy but may not always throw whites unless carefully isolated as it hails from genes which display violets, purples and pinks in the flower. The phoeniceum hybrids are thought to have been one of the original parents back in the 1930's of the taller, very pretty Cotswold Hybrids such as 'Gainsborough' and 'Pink Domino'. Sadly, like their parents they too are not long lived and can need replacing periodically.

    This is a relatively new cultivar which has come from New Zealand. The flowers are more upward facing than the standard Zantedeschia, slightly shorter and posses a lovely carmine glow to the base. In shape they tend more towards a Calla lily, more funnel shaped with less of a broad flare. Reports are that it is as hardy as Green Goddess, which we have had outside for many years, and that it will take a little more dryness than usual. Like all Zantedeschis it is best to cover younger plants with a generous mulch until they are well established. 60cm

    We're a bit confused over this one. We bought this plant in micropropagated several years ago as Zantedeschia 'Flamingo', but is less fully pink than we expected. We are not sure if it was supposed to be the plant bred in the Netherlands by The Klaver Brothers, Theo and Kees for the cut flower trade, or another cultivar which vies for the name. Whichever, believe the pictures which show the plant that we have. It has the beautiful chalice form of Zantedeschia but coloured with a lovely soft sugar pink, especially on the outside. It is a vigorous grower that will bloom freely once established and cut beautifully (cut it as the bud opens). 80cm. For a warm sunny spot with access to plenty of moisture. The crowns are best protected with a deep mulch in the early years and otherwise if Winters turn very cold.

Dorset Perennials – plants direct from the heart of Dorset.

At Dorset Perennials you will find a husband and wife team, Dawn and Martin, who have been plantsmen and nurserymen for nearly 25 years. Our nursery, situated in the North of Dorset close to the Somerset border, is full of the plants we love. There’s no overall theme, just an eclectic mix of perennials that, for one reason or another, we consider well worth growing. We have plants for shade, plants for sun, plants for wildlife and a few more just because. In short all the perennials you would ever need to make a garden full of colour throughout the year and full of the plants you need to make it hum with wildlife. We’ve tried to make this website full of inspirational colour and easy to use. The shop page has a nifty plant selector sidebar which can be used to filter our plants by size, colour season and so forth to help you quickly pin down the right plant for a particular spot.
