Alchemilla mollis. Scalloped hairy leaves form a dense clump and are a delight when bejewelled with dew or raindrops. The flower heads are like a dense limey green gypsophila. A fantastic tough and rewarding plant that will grow happily in all but soggy sites, thriving in dry shade. It assorts remarkably well with so many other plants as well. The colour of the flowers of Alchemilla is derived from two rows of sepals, the flowers lack petals. Medieval alchemists believed the water droplets that collected in the centre of alchemilla leaves possessed magical and medicinal properties. The plant has a long tradition of being used to cure women's ailments and the plant was consequently named in dedication to the Virgin Mary. The leaves were seen as resembling a mantle (cloak). This is a compact form growing just 35-40cm high with the deepest lavender-blue flowers of any Amsonia. It arose in a seedling batch of Amsonia tabernaemontana on a nursery in Connecticut and is thought to possibly be a hybrid with Amsonnia hubrechtii. It pays its way all year with neat shiny green leaves on a compact easy care plant, topped with flowers in June to July which emerge from long dark buds. It takes on lovely yellow Autumn colours in Autumn. Perfect as an edging plant. It does start off slowly but builds up stature year on year, rarely needing dividing. Anthemis 'Susanna Mitchell' is a lovely English hybrid perennial marguerite, between A. cupaniana and A. tinctoria, with creamy coloured single daisies with primrose yellow centres over a mass of silvery ferny foliage. Its cupaniana parentage gives it the lovely weed smothering mound of silvery filigree foliage and its ability to flower from as early as April, whilst A.tinctoria gives it the subtle creamy yellow hue and a bit more height (up to 50cm). A perfect plant for early insects with its rich nectar source, it enjoys a sunny spot in well drained, even a bit dry soils. It was found as a chance hybrid in the mid 1980's in the garden of Susana Mitchell and introduced in the 1990's by Blooms. Susanna planted Anthemis tinctoria, a plant that had been handed down in the family from her great Grandmother, next to Anthemis cupaniana. A chance seedling grew up and was admired, prompting her to deliberately make the cross subsequent times. Her daughter Susie Mitchell still grows the same Anthemis tinctoria and uses her Mother's lovely cross as her signature in all the gardens she creates and tends as Cotswold Garden Creations. Blue False Indigo. Baptisia carries tall, straight open spikes of really blue pea flowers followed by decorative seed pods which dry well for Winter decoration. Whilst most of the species in this genus grow on sandy, dry woodland soils, Baptisia australis is a native of riverbanks. It enjoys drainage but likes moisture and a deep root. Best planted in a lime free soil in a place where it can be left undisturbed. It is slow starter and disappointing to start with, but give it time as once established it will gradually build over a number of years to a plant that can flower to 75cm tall and be quite showy and a real talking point. -

A little known Chinese member of the Ranunculaceae which is rarely offered. It has beautiful dark green shining orbicular leaves on long thin, but stiff petioles. The leaves have substantial texture and an overlay of dark peaty-brown staining which varies in intensity with the time of year. At its best it rivals a piece of well patinated bronze. Named calthifolia after the resemblance to the shape and arrangement of leaves in our native Marsh Marigold, but Beesia is a lot classier, indeed my brother's wedding buttonholes were set off with these lovely leaves. The flowers are starry, a little like an enlarged tiarella on stiff stems, creamy white and produced continuously. For moisture retentive, humus rich soil in shade. This plant was introduced to cultivation by Dan Hinckley, a fact for which he is deservedly proud. -
