Helleborus niger. Christmas Rose. This is the Hellebore that is so associated with Christmas and Christmas cards, though it rarely flowers before January and is usually later still. However, the flowers are still lovely, charming wide open pure white waxy blooms with bright yellow centres carried mostly singly on stiff upright stems. Long lasting flowers to cheer the depths of Winter. They are not the easiest of plants, but a little knowledge can help you to site them well. They are plants of light woodland, with a requirement for shade and a dislike of acid soils and of poverty and drought. Give them a little lime and good humus content. Mulch annually, especially with mushroom compost and they will reward you. One last word of warning- you might like them on your Christams card and around your candle decoration, but voles love the buds for Christmas dinner. Medium-Large. H.plantaginea x H.sieboldii. A.Cummings & AHS 1986. We've found this variety to be very tough in the garden, and relatively resistant to slugs despite its soft appearance. The leaves are a simple elegant apple green, long and tapered in shape. As you would expect from a plantaginea cross, the flowers are large and fragrant (with perhaps just a whiff of aniseed?), lilac in bud, opening white. Rather than the usual ruddy pinks of the species, the dragon-mouth flowers are clean white, shading a little green from the leaves. The only child of the genus Morina that finds a ready home in the English garden. This rare beuty from the Himalayas, has a rosette of bright glossy green thistle-like leaves which form an evergreen rosette in mild or sheltered gardens. If brushed against (mind the spikes) they emit an intriguing citrusy aroma, quite out of character with its appearance. In mid summer it sends up strong stems which carry delightful and curious whorls of thistly bracted tubular flowers. As the flowers open they are of the palest pink, almost white, but once fertilisation is achieved the flowers develop a rosy glow and eventually become quite deep pink, thus siganlling to the bees that the nectaries have been drained. This creates a beautiful multi-tonal effect. Morinas need decent drainage and really like gravel gardens where they can seed about gently. The tap roots resent disturbance so allow them to grow where they choose. Named in honour of Rene Morin, a French nurseryman who is hailed as being the first to produce a plant catalogue way back in 1621. Needs full sun, moist but well drained soil and a mild climate. -

This is the pure white form of Blue Eyed Mary. Much more of a creeper than its cousin, cappadocica and earlier to start flowering in the year. Omphalodes verna 'Alba' will spread quite freely in any cool leafy soil that is not too wet producing a wide mat of rich green foliage dotted here and there withpur white flowers. Penstemon 'Sour Grapes' ('Stapleford Gem') is a larger, taller cultivar with strong upright flowering spikes of creamy white flowers, painted lilac and pink on the outside. 60cm, flowering throughout Summer. This is a cultivar with a confused history. It is entirely possible that two similar cultivars were named 'Sour Grapes', one raised by Nellie Britten in the late 1930's and the other given to Marjery Fish in the 1950's. Further confusion comes from a similarity and mixed labelling in the trade with P.'Stapleford Gem'. I don't want to make any claims as to which ours is, I would just say that it is a strong grower of dense habit with distinctively dark, slightly hairy leaves which at some times of the year are markedly cross shaped in the way they grow on the stem. The flowers vary dependant on conditions but are a mix of lilac and blue shades and most lovely. (Penstemon digitalis 'Purpureus') This herbaceous Penstemon has much to recommend it. The foliage is richly beetroot stained, forming an evergreen clump in Winter. The flowers are white, stained with lavender and pink, rising up to 1m on dark stemmed panicles. Penstemon digitalis is native to the East of Canada, stretching down into the USA. Naturally it grows in moist sandy soils in full sun. Husker Red was created in 1983 by Dale Lindgren at the University of Nebraska and named in honour of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, an intercollegiate Athletic team. Named perennials of the year for 1996 by The Perennials Plant Association. This is one of those plants that has really surprised us by how much we like it. It comes from a fairly robust genus where elegance is not usually the order of the day, but it really is a thing of great refinement. In habit it is fairly open and quite large growing at least 1m in each direction. The stems branch widely with each node bearing a long tapered leaf whose edge colours red, a colour that repeats into the long tapering flowering stems which are narrow and carry small starry white flowers which point and twist like those fireworks that whizz as they are sent skywards. An undemanding plant for a moist to wet soil and a must for the flower arranger. An exceptionally pure white Phlox with large dense heads of flowers (6-9") of good substance. Grows to 3' (1m) and from its initial flowering in July it is capable of repeat flowering until September if dead-headed and well cared for. Superb, heady, rich fragrance. Nice apple-green foliage is resistant to powdery mildew and even spotting providing conditions are good. This variety was discovered in its native America as a chance seedling. For full sun to partial shade in a moist fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. 36-40". Native Phlox paniculata are reserved and nurtured by the Brandywine Conservancy Volunteers at Chadd's Ford, Pennsylvania. In August 1987, the Phlox seedlings were inspected by the coordinator and Richard Simon of Bluemount Nurseries. Together they selected a white fragrant form with clean foliage and it was named 'David' by Mrs FM Mooberry, the project coordinator, for her husband. 'David' may well be a direct descendant of the original Phlox sent to Europe in 1930 by John Bartram. This a very tall and slender solomon's seal growing anything from 1 to 3m in height. The willowy stems are whorled with narrow leaves with curling tips. Below these come clusters of small bells. Whilst some strains come with rich red-pink flowers, our strain is a much more muted white with flared petals with purple edges. In the wild this plant can be found in forests and rocky slopes growing in shady situtions at altitudes of 700m up to 3600m. It is found in E.China down through Myanmar to Vietnam.
