    Salvia sclarea 'Turkestanica' (Clary) is a  magnificent show-stopping biennial to add impact to the garden. Large attractive rosettes of blue green foliage develop a branching flower head to 75cm tall in the second year. The flower are lavender with a white lip but the real stars of the show are the large showy white & pink bracts. Clary has been long cultivated both for ornament and flavour, having been used as a substitute for hops and to flavour wine. The names 'Clary' and 'sclarea' both derive form the Latin 'clarus' = clear; a reference to the use of the mucilaginous seeds to clear eyesight. The essential oil is often used in perfumery.     Whorled Sage. Similar in habit to 'Purple Rain', this sage has attractive lyre shaped grey-green fuzzy leaves which forma nice mound and decorate the arching flower spikes. These terminate in whorls of grey-green calyces from which peep out pure white nepeta-like blooms over a long period, many weeks if they are regularly dead-headed. 45cm, for full sun, drought tolerant.     The leaves are sea-green, very like the leaves of our native Rowan in shape, with delicately crimped edges picked out in a bright cream. It isn't an in-your-face variegation, its just enough to pick out the leaf shape and lighten the foliage effect. The cone-like flower heads are carried on stiff widely branched stems standing up to 6ft tall Each one is 3cm long, consisting of dozens of tiny burgundy flowers. Ruddy brown stems add to the whole effect.

The stems are suffused with rosy purple which pervades the buds giving the top of the pyramidal spike a warm glow.

    From a dark shining rosette of leaves arise several stems bearing relatively long-stalked white flowers with a soft fluttery edge. A relatively short lived variety. 60cm. May to August. Commonly known as the purple mullein, the parents of this plant hail form Southern Europe and Asia, growing to 60cm in flower which they do in the early part of Summer. It will self seed in the garden if happy but may not always throw whites unless carefully isolated as it hails from genes which display violets, purples and pinks in the flower. The phoeniceum hybrids are thought to have been one of the original parents back in the 1930's of the taller, very pretty Cotswold Hybrids such as 'Gainsborough' and 'Pink Domino'. Sadly, like their parents they too are not long lived and can need replacing periodically.

    This is a relatively new cultivar which has come from New Zealand. The flowers are more upward facing than the standard Zantedeschia, slightly shorter and posses a lovely carmine glow to the base. In shape they tend more towards a Calla lily, more funnel shaped with less of a broad flare. Reports are that it is as hardy as Green Goddess, which we have had outside for many years, and that it will take a little more dryness than usual. Like all Zantedeschis it is best to cover younger plants with a generous mulch until they are well established. 60cm

Dorset Perennials – plants direct from the heart of Dorset.

At Dorset Perennials you will find a husband and wife team, Dawn and Martin, who have been plantsmen and nurserymen for nearly 25 years. Our nursery, situated in the North of Dorset close to the Somerset border, is full of the plants we love. There’s no overall theme, just an eclectic mix of perennials that, for one reason or another, we consider well worth growing. We have plants for shade, plants for sun, plants for wildlife and a few more just because. In short all the perennials you would ever need to make a garden full of colour throughout the year and full of the plants you need to make it hum with wildlife. We’ve tried to make this website full of inspirational colour and easy to use.
