Description

Anthyllis vulneraria (Kidney Vetch)

Bright yellow pea flowers cluster in woolly heads and are a rich nectar source for bees and butterflies making this both valuable and cheerful. Good for naturalising. 50cm. short lived perennial. Grows best on chalky soils.

The dried herb has been used in the past as a substitute for tea in a mixture with the leaves of wild strawberry, raspberry and the flowers of Blackthorn.

Anthyllis comes from the Greek ‘anthos’ = flower and ‘ioulos’ = down, referring to the downy flower head. vulneraria comes from ‘vulnus’ = wound, a reference to the use as a wound healing herb. The Common name Kidney Vetch refers to the use of the herb to help with kidney complaints.
