Giant Fennel. Giant Fennel. Some things are worth waiting for and this giant fennel may take a year or two to settle in but eventually its handsome mound of finely cut leaves gives rise to a a stout 3m ( rarely 5m ! ) high inflorescence. Initially the tightly packed umbels of buds are glaucous with rosy tints, encased in fascinating bracts tipped with spidery tendrils. Later they open to a stately pyramid of 20+ sulphur yellow umbels and area mecca to a myriad of insects. Ferula is native to the Mediterranean and requires a well drained, sunny position. Although the young inflorescence are eaten in some regions the presence of the phenolic compound ferulic acid may be toxic. Usually treated as monocarpic and allowed to gently self seed, especially in gravel gardens. However if established young in Spring to allow the taproot to develop well it can perennate, especially if old flowers are removed to minimise seeding.
