Gladiolus 'Ruby' (papilio hybrid). Ruby is classed as a hybrid of papilio and you can certainly see the influence in the shape of the flowers and their slightly sinister hooded nature. The flowers are a rich ruby red with darker staining on the interior. Breeding has lent a more chunky nature than you would see in the species or in 'David Hills' and has brought much broader leaves. Plant it where it can poke up through other perennials for support and can lend its strident colour to your late summer border.
