Iris unguicularis ‘Mary Barnard’. The foliage on Mary barnard is altogether more compact, neater and rather more upright, but otherwise suffers the same traits as Iris unguicularis. The flower colour is much more intense than the species. The falls are a wonderful intense purple blue, becoming even deeper sapphire blue towards the centre where the egg-yolk yellow beard is cross hatched by white rays. The standards are stained ruby red in the throat. Very hardy and rewards the Winter gardener with its delightful gems on mild days in february and March. Discovered in Algeria in 1962 by E.B.Anderson.

At Dorset Perennials you will find a husband and wife team, Dawn and Martin, who have been plantsmen and nurserymen for nearly 25 years. Our nursery, situated in the North of Dorset close to the Somerset border, is full of the plants we love. There’s no overall theme, just an eclectic mix of perennials that, for one reason or another, we consider well worth growing.
