This fascinating and unusual Verbena, Verbena officinalis var. grandiflora ‘Bampton’, was discovered in the public garden in Bampton, Devon and has been identified as a variant of V.officinalis var. grandiflora which hails from S.Europe. Quite how it came to Devon is a mystery – perhaps seed travelled home as a holiday memento or on the feet of a bird. It is related to our native vervain. It emerges in Spring from a tight evergreen crown as dark purple shoots clothed with glossy, serrated purple leaves which have a real metallic sheen. The dark purple stems become wiry and branched making a twiggy bush about 2 feet high covered in tiny pink flowers over a very long period. For well drained soil in full sun.
